allot of people talk about how great pride was. I got into mms around 2008 if watch some old pride fights and honestly want all that impress didn't like all these circus fights example giant silva vs heath not sure if that is how u spell his name. also hated the ring constantly the ref will stop the fight to move the fighters. and finally the commentators weren't the great I know a lot of people are gonna talk shit but I love the ufc package way better

Watch shogun vs lil nog and ur opinion will change. But seriously it's all preference I liked the stomps the knees from side control and the lack of lay and pray. I hated the cleaning of cuts although.

It was much different watching it live than watching it after it was dead. Pride had an aura about it. You knew something special was going to happen every event. Youtube and DVD's cant capture it the same.

Lack of lay and pray is easier when you stand fighters up almost instantly. Wand really benefited from that rule.

They both have their highs and lows.

    I enjoyed both.

Why anyone has to hate on one of them and knob-slob the other makes no sense to me.

Better fighters in Pride ovearll HW and MW (LHW) that is. Shogun, Wanderlei, Lil Nog, Rampage, Overeem, Sergei etc vs Liddell, Randy and Tito? Dont think so. Igor, Fedor, Nog, Mirko Barnett vs wait who?

Then the rules- a matter of preference, I liked Pride way better.

Then the atmosphere of the show- the music, the line ups, the MMA spirit and the respectful crowd- all of which comes natural in Japan as opposed to a bunch of hooligans in small arenas.

Gravity of the events- no comparison really.

Seriously, in the beginning and mid 2000's Pride and K-1 were the best fighting shows on the planet and I believe no one who isnt American would state otherwise

UFC from 99'-06' or Pride from 99'-06'?

I'd take Pride. Obviously right now the UFC has the best fighters, but back then Pride had better fighters.

    different times, dude.
    You can't compare both.

    Time changes and things evolved.

But Pride was the first. Obviously it had some issues that Zuffa learned from and modified.

Some good things also was lost along the way just because things had to change to get to where we are today (i.e. rules).

open weight tournaments (ANY tournaments for that matter), the entrances were better (who can forget how great they were?), theere was more brutality, fighters were more... gutsy than now (but less skilled), and things were just bigger!

I enjoyed Pride and I enjoy UFC. I really don't understand why people can't enjoy both or always feel the need to put one down in order to hype the other...

just saw this fitting GREAT video on another thread... Fits here perfectly!

its gonna sound strange but i think a big reason it was so awesome was because of the pleasing visual of the white canvas.

What do you mean PRIDE was the first?

I actually preferred the UFC's rules and approach to mma as a sport more than I did PRIDE. PRIDE was too pro-wrestling for me in that regard. That aside, there were some great fighters/fights in PRIDE at the time, and the ppvs tended to be more stacked than the UFC.

I've only seen Pride repeats. That said it had much of the air of early UFC with freakshow matches and mismatches. Albeit, a bit more skilled. With that at the start of each match you had no idea if some one was going to get their head stoved in or not. In the repeat, with the known result it loses something.

Since he 'watched some old pride fights', I doubt that got a chance (understandably) to watch these fights or even a small percentage of the fights.

If you randomly pick 10 UFC fights (not events, fights) you will certainly be disappointed in the amount of "good" fights.

Not bashing UFC - just saying that you can't appreciate PRIDE if you weren't around to watch every event like we do the UFC now.

i personally have been a fan of mma since about 1994 when the ufc came to my hometown, and before that boxing. i started watching ufc events from then on, when i could or when they came out on vhs.

when pride formed and shortly there after became a mma power organization, i immediately became a fan. it was something new and seemed to be the way mma was heading. they had endless super matches and epic bouts. it was such an extravaganza when any pride fc tounament was coming up. the theatrics, the fighters and the fans made it amazing. then ufc restructured and became the super power of mixed martial arts not to long after.

then the demise and buy out of Pride. i will not lie, i continued to watch and support the ufc during the pride era. how could i not.

but all this being said, T.S., you missed out on many great events and epic fights. do more research and continue to watch old Pride events. you will not be let down.

2001-2006 pride was better.. ufc still put on some great events but pride had better fighters, better cards.
