I am an avid freestyle submission practitioner and I only have one friend to practice with ...He is a TKD blackbelt and also attends many self defense classes. He also insists on 'pressure points' during grappling.I myself think this is BS,but he won't grapple without using them.Soon as i sink in a perfect triangle...BAM a thumb underneath my armpit and MAN does it hurt.

Just wondering what your guys take is on pressure points and grappling.Thanks.

well he will be hurting more when you snap his arm

We dont use them rolling in class. I guess they could be useful in a real fight.

yeah that's what i figured..i gotta get a new grappling buddy,lol

turn the angle better and pull down on his head and pass him out, if your triangle is tight he should pass out in 10 sec or less

Use cheap holds on him also. Like driving your elbow into his face when you have him pinned. Or use a face crush by putting your knee on his face and pulling up on the back of his head.

skull ride is fun too
like knee on stomach but backwards and on the head...
maybe he'll stop w/ the pp after he gets cauli

Personally, I let guys use pressure points and small digit locks, if they choose to do so. Not all of the guys training are there for sport or MMA applications. Some guys are there for the self-defense aspect of it and if they don't train their techniques they will fail to be effective on the street. However, if they are asses about it, then when I get the sub I let it on a lil extra.

i would let em go for it, but u can bet your bottom dollar i would be ridgehanding their nose to get the RNC

We allow pressure points in sparring. All they really do is piss off the opposition.

If he uses his arm which is inside the triangle then switch to an arm bar.
If he use his arm outside the triangle, control the arm or hold his head down to 'force' the tap.

The face crush can be a legit cheap triangle if done properly, fyi. I only do it when goofing off with close, long time training partners because it is such a bullshit and look-down-upon move, but if you get the knee in the side of the neck instead of in the jaw, the crush can be used as a (somewhat) legit choke.

Good thread, I find.

The places I have trained don't t give any room to pressure points. Someone using them in rolling wouldn't make friends, it would be seen as a cheap shot.

However, for self defense purposes, I think pressure points are really important, with the eyes as a priority.

In a situation where 2 persons fight without any rules, I don't see BJJ working at all, if 1 uses pressure points & biting.

If u want to learn how to defend urself: learn striking, a little bit of throwing, then a little bit of ground fighting, then a lot of dirty stuff (how to attack the eyes, balls, throat).

Whether it's BJJ, Wrestling, MT, it's a sports with rules. By definition very different from self defense.

We called this Kung Fu in the school where I trained. And the "dirty stuff" is standard techniques taught to every student from the start.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but how legal are Pressure points in MMA? (ufc, pride, wec, etc) .. I know small joint manipulation is illegal.

Not sure, but I think a punch in the face would be better than going for pressure points.
