Young people today can join the military for 4 years and get like 50k + to pay for their college after they serve the country. That seems like a better system than just handing tax payer money over.

I may agree if there was more ways to "serve" other than fighting wars for international interests.

Absolutely. That's where discussion of what "work it off" matters. Depending on what that vague phrase means I'm viewing this as essentially a version of the educational benefits of the GI Bill extended to other types of service.

When something is "free" it's not treated with proper respect. Would you slap a $5 prostitute or a $1000 escort?

That's right. The cheap one gets treated like a rented mule because she's perceived as valueless. If k-12 were accorded the value they should provide instead of treated contemptibly by the lower classes most would suffice with k-12. But when you can't get kids to behave in a civil fashion and actually learn at anything close to the kids potential those of us who did take advantage of what was provided are going to balk at continuing to pay for day care for adult children. Especially adult children that are going to take stupid courses such as _________ identity studies and ________ history. Get a job hippie! Save some money and get an education in something that has value.

Comparing the two systems and the general societal attitude towards education(in Murka, you have people actually openly mocking college and education and trying to roll it back) shows that the US isnt serious about it.
