Right now I am doing a 5x5 (for the most part) program of Squat/Bench/Deads with a day inbetween each lift. I have to do a "fitness test" in a few weeks that requires you to do as many pushups as possible in a minute. How do I mix in pushup training with my usual powerlifting style training and don't overtrain/burn myself out? What I have been doing specifically with weights/lifts/reps/sets can be found here on my training log... http://www.sherdog.net/forums/showthread.php?t=406278

If it's in a couple weeks I'd suggest taking bench and any other tricep exercises out of your workout and doing pushups every second day. Seems pretty simple. However, having done one of those tests before myself, I wonder do you really need to train to do enough pushups? Having not trained pushups in many years, I'm sure I could do fourty easily in that time frame.

I just started lifting about 4 weeks ago, before then I hadn't lifted in several years, and I hadn't done pushups for almost a year. I have no idea how many I could do now, but I deffinately don't want to stop doing bench and the assist lifts. I'm looking for how I can keep doing the same powerlifting stuff and add to it the pushups. Thanks for the advice though. I don't think I need to do anything that extreme. I think I could probably do enough, I just want to make sure I do as many as possible without sacrificing the powerlifting.

Well why don't you try doing as many pushups as you can right now? If you can do even just thirty you should be fine, which would mean you wouldn't need to change anything.
