Dustin should have taken the fight. Tony was his path to the title. Tony is in his late 30s and his last fight he took an insane amount of damage. If there was a time to fight Tony, it's now. A win over Tony would essentially a guaranteed title shot and the fight had a high probability of being FOTN.

Now instead of Dustin making 300k + 150k to win, with the possibility of a 50k bonus, he's pissed off Dana, and could very well not even sniff a title shot for the next couple years depending on the landscape of LW.

Terrible decision by Dustin trying to force Dana's hand when he's one fight away from a probable title shot. Especially if Gatheje won the title, he'd have a really good chance in the rematch and once champ he could really negotiate for larger payday.

He played it for the short term, lost, and just fucked himself for the long term.

Edit: This isn't even factoring in the chance of either Khabib or Gatheje pulling out due to injury and Dustin possibly getting a short notice chance at the title.

Yea he fucked up. Jon and Jorge has better leverage when they made they play

254 is STTAAACCKED with or without him

He should have made his play after winning the belt.

Khabib was likely to retire next year. Dustin is front runner to be next the champion.

Dustin should bided his time. Won the belt than sat out right before a PPV

He'll get his shot, he's next in line just as Conor is, the divison other contenders still have a few fights until they sniff a title shot

Lol imagine if this turns out to be another Usman Masvidal situation i.e. Tony gets booked against another LW contender but that dude pulls out a week before the fight so they quickly give Dustin what he wants lol

Hindsight is 20/20 but I would argue that Porier had more leverage now than ever before to negotiate more money. Sucks that Uncle Dana is stingy about it however the sad truth is the LW division is so stacked right now that any fighter is easily replaceable.

Won’t work Dustin isn’t the headliner. This card will do big numbers with or without him

How is it career defining when he already had a career defining moment fighting for the title? Also beating Tony won't guarantee him a title shot since he got finished by the champ not that long ago. Might as well ask for more money since he has more leverage over beating the guy who beat Tony

I don’t think Dustin ever beats khabib. It’s a terrible matchup.

The next couple guys coming up to fight top 5 are not going to be as big of names as tony or Justin. This is Dustin’s time to get paid. Not only that, but a loss to another contender and his ability to negotiate a better contract is gone.

He absolutely did the right thing. He should keep forcing his hand. If the ufc wants it, they’ll pay him regardless of what Dana says to the press

I'd understand if he was negotiating for a title fight or the champ. But he's coming off a dominant loss to Khabib and a close win over Hooker. He's already getting paid good money compared to the division. He's acting like he's coming off a long streak with highlight reel vicious finishes.

I agree LW is so stacked, he wasn't in the position to further negotiate. Get the belt then play hard ball.

He’s not going to get the belt unless hes still the best striker in the division after khabib retires. Which despite what khabib says “oh yeah 1-2 fights max”...we’ve seen these things drag on for years before. Just look at DC. He was supposed to retire YEARS ago. So Ngannou was put on a shelf...Poirer is too old to get put in a shelf. He won’t be the same fighter after Khabibs retirement that he is now. Especially if he keeps getting in 5 round slug fests

He really acted like a beta gatekeeper after the Khabib fight making it clear he will never beat the russian.
And he dare to ask for huge salary increase.
Nice try but Dana bows for no beta, and this division is one of the most stacked.
Dana doesnt need Dustin this much and good luck to him to be booked soon.

He was a little bit too comfortable with the loss.
He didn't even pretend to act as if it was a learning lesson he planned to come back stronger from. It killed any possible anticipation of their ever being any interest in a rematch (not that there was any).

He could also lose to Tony, get injured, or have a boring fight, all three if which will kill his chances at negoiating a better deal. Even if he does beat him it doesnt give him more negoiating ability for a rematch with Khabib since he lost convincingly.

Hes been in plenty of wars and should ask for more money before its too late. Hes been rocked a bunch throughout his career - better off to get paid now before that chin gives out.

Possibly. Lightweight is stacked so always someone looking to get ahead of you. That being said, that means there'll likely be a good fight for Dustin either way.
