These are the exact kinds of stops that start as nothing and can end with the black guy getting shot or arrested for absolute bullshit.
The cop asked him like 10 times about weed. Had him waiting for like a half hour. Asked him to step out of the car. Told him he felt like he was being deceptive and looked agitated and like he was under the influence. Wanted him to do a sobriety test.
How long is the citizen supposed to remain calm and cool with a guy that is LOOKING to piss him off? The moment the black guy shows some irritation or anger, the cop can then go into have an excuse to up his aggression. It's bullshit.
It's easy to say "just comply", but how many times are we expected to smile through obvious horseshit like this with a "yessa masta"?

Is crazy because I just looked it up and apparently its illegal to have those air fresheners and even Rosary necklaces dangling from the rear view out here in Cali. But I see those every day, I used to drive with an freshener like that and the cops never pulled me over, and I see people here with Rosaries hanging from the rear view all the time.

People rarely get pulled over for that. This police man also comes off like he has some mental issues he is obsessive compulsive and probably wanted to plant some weed on him, I bet he smoked pot on the job and was nervous so he was going to set up some random black dude to take the fall. Honestly bor, it should not matter if he is 'clean cut'. A brother sporting dreds and a hoodie should have the same presumption if innocents and rights.

In one narrow sense it matters (not to the cop, but to the viewers of the film) that the man was so respectful and cooperative. It prevents the officer from pretending as if he were keying in one some other characteristic. It effectively isolates race as the issue. The cop was pretty damn sure all black guys smoke marijuana, and he seemed eager to find or manufacture facts to support that conclusion. So it's the perfect stop. We can all agree. The hanging air freshener gives a cop a good reason to pull someone over. It can block out a blind spot and you may get t boned or head on collision.

I grew up in a mostly white city/town. It was well known that cops would pull over a car load of white kids with air fresheners hanging. And yes they would harass them about drugs, and many times they found them.

This black dude probably hung the tree in his car, set up video, waited til he got pulled over for it so he could cry like a baby.

Old timey, unenforceable laws are still on the books in some places.

If for nothing else though, that should serve as an example of how to deal with a bullshit traffic stop. Don't get all edgy and defiant, and escalate the situation. Just calmly go through the motions with the cop. That stop could've gone a lot differently if the driver was some try hard moron.

You are right. I was thinking more generally that in my experience growing up in a small town filing police complaints would get you extra scrutiny.
