Damn that sucks man, saw this earlier today before it was deleted. Reebok deal really kills these guys. this is what they should of been getting monthly payments from sponsors to help them get by day to day but now that weak $2500 every 6 months from reebok.

A quote from the article
Excerpt from an interview with The Korean Zombie’s manager:

“The UFC DOES pay for airfare and hotel for the fighter + 1. However, for fighters from Korea, we have to come in at least 10 days early (2 weeks is better) in order to get used to the time difference. The UFC tickets flights (and books the hotel) for 4 or 5 days before the fight. So, the fighters from Korea (and other foreign countries) have to pay the difference in fares and the extra days for room and board.

If you assume that a fighter is going to bring, at least, their coach and a sparring partner (for KTT, they bring me as well), that means the fighter is paying for 2 extra plane tickets (usually between $1200-2000 RT from Seoul). Add in 5 or 6 days of room and board for 4-5 guys and it starts to add up! Then take out US federal and state taxes, then the guys get taxed again in Korea. Subtract paying the fees to the coach and sparring partner… and what’s the fighter left with? Unless they get a bonus (or two), or are making a really good base pay, not much.

If you think about the fact that [Korean Zombie] (before the Poirier fight) was making $6,000 as base pay, then you’ll realize that for a lot of our fights in the US, we end up losing money. But, the fighters do it hoping to build up to bigger paydays and more sponsor money.”

I get where he is coming from but look at Chris Lytle. Full time firefighter his entire MMA career. It is possible to do both and be successful. Some may say Lytle was never a top tier guy but he was the epitome of a gatekeeper to the top 10. Always fought his ass off and made a ton of money by fighting to finish the guy (which he didnt always do) instead of fighting to win on points.

And he did it in an Era where fighters made even less money than they do now.

Actually, a job like firefighter is just about perfect for a fighter. Full time firefighters generally work a 24 hour shift followed by 2-4 full days off.

At the bottom and middle of the sport, you cannot be a professional MMA fighter without having a job or being otherwise subsidized. As a general rule, this is true for everyone other than the top handful of marquee fighters.

Personally I would rather the UFC scale back 20% of the roster and pay everyone a modest, but livable wage so we could see guys fight who are training as their job as opposed to moonlighting.

For Piotr I think the opportunity to make it has come in gone unfortunately, certainly he's going to be cut.

These guys are being paid mad backroom bonuses though. Plus, he left out the part where he got a free pair of shorts!

I agree, though I imagine the ufc sees it as fewer events = less revenue,

I long ago stopped getting upset about fighter pay.

Fighters know what they are getting themselves into. Very few fighters get rich off this sport.

His free reebok fight kits will keep him warm when he sleeps on the street.

Maybe they should spread out the $200k in fight night bonuses... it would be about $10k per fighter for most cards...

In before someone screams "free market"...

I would take 20% less fights on each card if it meant the guys we actually saw fight we're training full time. I'm willing to bet everyone would get on board with that.

i think he is a solid fighter , to bad to hear it going like this :/... Ufc needs 2 pay more money or let the fighters have there own sponsors so they can make some good money ....

He should have thought about that before he tested positive for a banned substance and got a FOTN bonus tooken away and had to sit out for 9 months

That's unfortunate. I don't know what the solution is. Not everyone can be the best or at the top of their division.

3 losses in a row he will probably get cut too. Merry Christmas, Piotr.

even if the reports are in the same ballpark, the UFC can easily afford to triple everyone's payouts without going over 35% of their profit margin.

I'm not anti capitalism, and the UFC will eventually make these payouts, but they will not volunteer them, the pay rates have increased as better fighters come in and negotiate better deals. If UFC did triple the rates over night, then negotiations would be far more limited for talent they really want to invest in. Not to mention the money spent on opening and maintaining new markets. The fighters just need some leverage to get the ball rolling.

Pretty much. He lost out on over $50,000 or more, sat out 9 months, and then came back.

Gleison Fucking Tibau got $100,000 for FOTN because of this. Try processing that.

I'd like to be a soccer player but I'm not good enough to make a living out of it. Guess what I did. No, I didn't put my family through financial struggle by being selfish and only thinking about myself. I got a real job.

That's what Piotr should do. He just isn't good enough to be a top caliber fighter.

Some of you people don't know how the world works and it's cringeworthy.

There would be almost no pro athletes or musicians at all if this mindset was prevalent. Most of the top guys go through rough patches as well. Your way is very easy though. Give up the instant that your dream seems inconvenient. Piotr is working another job as well brother.

edit: above posts have thrown this whole thread into disarray. No one knows if Piotr even has money problems now. My post still stands though. These careers are risky, and you will get NOWHERE if you aren't gritty during tough times

agree but 10k for an average 5 fights maximum...that's 50k less coaches & taxes you will probably take at least 20k home...not as lucrative as it seems...that's the reebok deal to you.

yea could be, but why would someone fake a post from piotr hallmann of all people?
could be that jon jones i got hacked thing in fear of UFC punishment

Or, you know, some guy with only a few fights and isn't too popular in the UFC is the perfect fighter to show as "not getting paid".

A very moderate and well reasoned post.

bummer, he showed a lot of promise in his first few fights, but he got brutalized and KO'd by Oliveira

He'd probably be better off in KSW right now. He'd likely make more money for easier fights and get some momentum back.

He should go to Bellator. Would do much better against lower competition and sponsor money is there.

Edit: Lol thinking same JonKunDo

Yeah how are these dirt-poor guys affording steroids to begin with? I thought that shit was pretty expensive.
