I suppose he's not totally wrong. The F16 is pretty old nowadays.

Actually, that would require Philippines to have a full spectrum of supporting capabilities to maximize the F-16's effectiveness. I'm talking about proper training, maintenance, combat doctrines, integrated air defence network, airborne support assets such as AEW aircraft and tankers and hardened air bases to operate the jets from. Those take years if not decades to develop, and could potentially cost billions.

Without those, it wouldn't be an effective deterrent and China would still slap them around. Weapon systems do not operate in a vacuum environment. Philippines simply doesn't have the resources for that. For China's neighbors, the only guarantee of safety is American presence and intervention. If they had to go toe to toe with China, they'd likely get brutalized.

My point is they couldn't afford to set up the proper support structures to utilize modern combat aircraft. Even if you gave F-22 to Philippines, they still couldn't operate them effectively to change the outcome of potential conflict. They're just not in a position to compete directly. What they urgently need right now is some armed drones to deal with the Islamic militants, along maritime patrol aircraft to assert sovereignty.

Orgasmo is correct. A high end fight with the Chinese would be a systems vs systems event, and the Philippines is waaay behind the curve there. A token F16 buy would offer the PLAAF little more than target practice.

They should just continue buying those Korean made FA-50s to train competent pilots.
