U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and German biotech firm BioNTech announced Monday their coronavirus vaccine was more than 90% effective in preventing Covid-19 among those without evidence of prior infection, hailing the development as “a great day for science and humanity.”

This is great news and all, but it seems a little fishy that this is all happening immediately after the election.

Checks and balances, it won't come out until 2021. Still needs to be approved by fda

That's excellent news for the people who actually need the vaccine. It wouldn't make sense to recommend everyone to take it since over 80% of people don't even get symptoms and when they do it's almost always very minor flu like symptoms.
And yes I've been saying this before the election, they had the vaccine ready but didn't want to complete it until after the election is over (I believe it's for political reasons).

It makes sense for asymptomatic people to take it to limit the spread.

But if the vulnerable people take it then it doesn't really matter if it spreads. It's not like it's an extremely dangerous virus, it's death rate is very similar to the flu. People can go back to work and just focus on protecting those with weakened immune systems.

This is the exact timeline we’ve been discussing. They've repeatedly said they were going to try to have something go through clinical trials and have evidence of efficacy by the end of the year, and to hopefully get people the vaccine sometime in 2021.

The only reason why this would seem unusual to you, would be if you were listening to Donald Trump instead of scientists. Donald Trump kept saying people would get the vaccine this year, maybe even by election time (....and there's your only sketchy statement, a politician using election day as his timeline).

This is good news though, and one more step in the right direction. Hopefully things continue to go well and 6 months from now people can start getting the vaccine.

It's ten times worse than the flu but yeah, fuck math.

We don't know who is exactly vulnerable. Young people die from it too. It's not likely but it can happen. Makes sense for people to get the vaccine. If you're trump, shouldn't you try to claim this as a victory? Technically he's still president. He should be on this.

We really know it's the scientists that did it but might as well pull the curtain over you trumpists eyes again.

Everything is a fucking conspiracy for you guys.

That's not correct, according to the WHO statistics it's 3 times more deadly than the flu. Although I'm skeptical about that 3% death rate since so many of those who die from other illnesses are going down as a death from covid. Young people die from the flu and other infections too, unfortunately.

EDIT: Ya these stats are completely wrong lol my bad must have misread something. But the point remains the same, the lethality of covid is being completely exaggerated by the media.

...flu is 0.1 percent iirc. If 1% of people die from it, it's literally ten times more deadly than the flu. Do math man.

It is still highly transmissible and healthy people don't want to get even mildly sick. They might go to work but their spending habits will still be curbed big time. For the economy to return to normal people need to feel secure in public, secure on airplanes, etc and for that to happen herd immunity needs to be established. That means more than just old people need to take the vaccine.

Good news imo - How long it immunises people is the real important question

Doesn't really matter. If it's even as good as the flu vaccine (50%), it'll reduce the death rate to a small fraction of a percent. If it's really effective, it might be eradicated.

''The figures show that Covid-19 is a bigger risk to people than flu, partly because there is a vaccine that protects those at risk against the flu strain circulating every year.''
