Yan has some of the best counter wrestling in all of MMA and Merab is one of the best takedown artists in the sport right now too. It's an interesting fight, both men have among the best cardio in the division so it being 3 or 5 rounds is very relevant particularly because Yan likes to start slow. Merab won't give Yan space even if he defends takedowns, he will get pressed against the cage, clinched, and Merab will continue to force the grappling so Yan will need to find one ways to punish him, to create space and maintain range. Also Merab has a huge asset in Aljo to help him prepare who's been in with Yan several times, it'll also serve as a measuring stick comparing Merabs performance to Aljo's if Merab can pull it off.

It's a weird fight, both guys are a bit of boogiemen to the top 10 and would outclass most of the ranked division yet they're both out of the title picture for different reasons. Match making makes sense but I'd still have rather them faced other people I guess. Amazing fight though, godtier skill level, we don't get these often. I'll take Yan but I think it'll be hard-fought. Yan's career might just sorta be over if he loses here, really tough situation.

I'll feel bad for Yan after he gets wrestle fucked here for another loss in a row. Granted the circumstances surrounding his current skid are quite unique, but it is what it is. That being said Yan could definitely win this matchup and get the ball rolling again. Definitely seems the fight to make with everyone mostly already matched up.

I kind of think merab might be able to stall petr out enough to win, especially since he's been studying yan for years with Aljo.

Wouldn't be surprised to see yan knock him silly though.

Merab deserves to get knocked out for stalling Aldo into retirement at Utah in elevation. Nothing personal. He seems like a nice guy.
Not just stalling Aldo, stalling the division. Wins a title elimination bout he definitely didn't deserve, and refuses to fight for the belt because he wants to be a gatekeeper for Aljo. Get the fuck out here

Does Aldo deserve to get knocked out for showing zero sense of urgency and accepting the loss? Literally I and several other people said what Merab was going to do, Aldo's whole camp was prepared for it and he didn't even try to get out of 2nd gear. Merab did what he needed to do, Aldo didn't. I blame Aldo, he never made it out of 1st gear and was completely stymied. His cardio and durability have been getting worse for years and years but he seemed pretty shot vs Merab to me, reminded me a lot of late stage Woodley.

It's a joke? Lol

I blame the UFC more for booking fights in Utah than anything else.

Still, every time Aldo threw he landed clean. Then it got to the point where he couldn't even throw a jab in round three he was so tired.

Yeah, I just hear a lot of people say it and I guess I feel the opposite. If some guy is getting smothered and stuck on bottom, I'm usually frustrated they don't have a means to attack off their back, stop the takedowns, manage space, get back up, keep up cardio wise in the grappling exchanges etc. I hear Dana and everyone, just fuck me, if people can't stop it, it's exactly what fighters should be doing. I blame the fighters who have a giant hole in their games or in Aldos case I was glad he lost and Merab won because lets face it, Merab is world class and the tail end of Aldo's prime took place some 3 or 4 years ago at this point. I'd rather Aldo retire and Merab continue on as an elite fighter in the division. It just made sense. Don't get me wrong, it's important for guys to add offense to their grappling and top control too but I still but the burden on the guy losing, only logical.
