Do you have any of these guys at your gym - you know, the ones who will never pull/play guard and will battle off their knees for an eternity to avoid it?

Yeah, usually they seem to be former high school or collegiate wrestlers--and eternal blue belts. Basically no matter how badass your top game is, you can't get your purple if you don't have a guard game.

Well, starting from the feet I never pull guard. Going from the knees I almost always pull guard, unless they're more advanced than me or I'm trying to turn up the heat on them.

My reasoning? BJJ should train me for the worst case scenario. I want to have great escapes and an excellent guard, and never have to use them. So I'll work my guard when it's time for that, but never concede bottom when starting on the feet.

And yes, I know the guys you're talking about. If they're dead set on top position when starting from the knees, I let them take it. I have no love for midget judo/wrestling.

In BJJ i'm all about pulling guard and chillaxing with my opponent. I figure when I go to wrestling the next day I can unleash the beast and fight tooth and claw for top position.

That's me. I don't battle on my knees. I'll just sit down and try a sweep sitting or something similar, but usually I have no problem because alot of people give up top position, since they are guard pullers it works right into my desire to work passing and top pressure/transitions. I do use a fair amount of closed guard in transitions and what not, but mostly a sweeping game designed to get back to the top and work from there. When I am submitting, I submit from the top probably 60% of the time, 40% from the guard. But also I spend 80-90% of my time on top trying to transition, hold positions, and advance my position. Submissions for me at this time are an afterthought...If I am in a position to get one I take it.

But currently I get very little satisfaction from submitting someone, especially from guard. I feel great when I hit a smooth sweep, or pass through a guard, a tap just signals the end of an interesting sequence for me.

I'll probably never make it to purple though (Blue Belt for life!)...so this might not be the best strategy. But my strength is definitely in the top game, I do not enjoy being underneath people.

There are very few instances where I would feel okay butt-flopping, butt-scooting or jumping guard. Falling into an instant sweep from guard is fun though. Maybe when a guy's guard is so badass that I do not want to be on top....instead feeling safer with his top game. Depends really.

I do find it annoying, but my guard is my weak point and I should be training it more anyways.

If I'm standing on my feet, I will never pull guard. I think that's one of the stupidest things to have come into BJJ.

If I'm on my knees, it's more of a 'I don't feel like standing' situation and then I think it's fine to pull guard or try a sweep. I try not to stall on my knees for too long, though, because I think it's pointless.

i'm pretty sure if both guys pull guard you get that scissor action you see in pornos with lesbians. kind of a weird moment in bjj but it happens.

Kinda funny... theres so many of those guys in America and in Brazil it is the exact opposite. Guys that pull every single time. If you pull guard first, theyll pull anyway and absolutely refuse to play top

which actually brings me to my conclusion:

just duke it out at judinho or wrestlinho and who ever lands on the bottom plays bottom and who ever lands on top plays top.
