What do you think about people who always play devil’s advocate?

Are they genuinely trying to be helpful?
Are they socially inept and just can’t listen without giving a contradicting opinion?
Are people who can’t handle the devil’s advocate’s opinions too sensitive?

I ask because I find it increasingly difficult to have conversations with my sister without her always playing devil’s advocate. Sometimes you’re not asking for an opinion, you just want someone to hear you out.

Thoughts?

I don't want to play the devil's advocate here, but what's wrong with playing the devil's advocate?

Most people to have tunnel vision, are swimming in their own bias, and rarely try to understand anyone’s perspective but their own. Having someone around who always plays devils advocate is a good thing, if anything.

Sometimes you just get the feeling some people just have a natural contrarian personality.

Some people are intentionally contrarian, as a means of coming across as “the smart one in the room.” But even if it’s a means to fluff’s one’s ego, doesn’t mean such people don’t have a use. The point is, it’s generally a good idea to consider multiple sides to an issue, and to be around people who have different perspectives, IMHO.

It can be incredibly valuable if harnessed, especially in the business world. Sadly, usually people like this though are just incredibly difficult and like criticizing people and things.

It’s a pain sometimes and disheartening. You talk to people about something you are excited to do and people just start pointing out problem and blah blah and it’s can sometimes take the wind out of your sails.

Sometimes there’s equal value in simply being heard. I suppose my issue is with the folks who always feel the need to play devil’s advocate. Not sure every situation calls for it.

I always appreciated the devil’s advocates at work. Felt it was always appropriate in that setting.

Just to play devils advocate here, are you sure you aren’t gay for them?

People who you know have an up or down opinion, but play Devil's Advocate to not be confrontational are the worst.
