I watched this last night, I was very surprised.

Not that surprising. #1 and #2 have Memphis. #3 has Detroit. #4 is St Louis. #5 is in the middle of Louisiana.

I wonder what their criteria is? I don't know why they ranked counties over cities but here are the cities with the worst homicide rates:

1. St Louis
2. Baltimore
3. Detroit
4. New Orleans
5. Baton Rouge
6. Kansas City
7. Cleveland
8. Memphis
9. Newark
10. Cincinnati

Violent crime in the US is nowhere near where it was in the 90s. Nobody but celebrities had bodyguards then. So what is the difference?

I would suggest a smaller percentage of the population possesses a greater amount of wealth than they have before. They ran out of other stuff to buy. This is conspicuous consumption. Or the wealthy are just bigger pussies than they were in the 90s.
