Curious about how the BJJ skills of Roger Gracie, Jacare and Demian Maia compare.

Reason I ask is when Maia first came to the UFC, he went on a tear, particularly because of his BJJ. But as he went up the ranks, this became less and less of an advantage (see Silva, Marquardt). He eventually had to become more well rounded. His striking eventually improved and didn't look bad against Munoz (despite the loss).

So let's assume Jacare and Roger have the same learning curve. The first 2-3 fights they can showcase their superior BJJ, but eventually they may encounter a fighter who can nullify these skills unless their BJJ skills are so good that they can continue to use these skills right to the top 5 or 3.

So those in the know (as I am not), how do the BJJ skills of Maia, Roger and Jacare compare to each other (as Maia has held the title IMO of having his BJJ skills hyped the most by he UFC), and on top of that, do you think Jacare and Roger can develop their striking in the same path that Maia has where is can be a decent tool, if not improved?

Thanks in advance.

Roger has the best pure BJJ out of all three.

Jacare has the best TAKEDOWNS that actually allow him to put his elite BJJ to use. This aspect in addition to his solid striking makes him the most well-rounded Mixed Martial Artist of the three IMO

Maia is obviously the most seasoned/experienced of the three

But with all three, their BJJ skills will probably deteriorate as they commit more to MMA. That has already happened with Jacare and Maia. Jacare has recently announced retirement from BJJ competition after losing badly in his most recent BJJ match. I am not sure how serious Roger is about his MMA career, but I'd think he's the most likely of the three to go back to being a full-time BJJ practitioner

Not sure for which style you are asking, Sir, so here's my 2 cents.

For "pure" BJJ: With Gi: Roger, Jacare, Maia (even though Maia beat Jacare (barely) in the past)

No Gi, I say Jacare, Roger, Maia.

For MMA BJJ (yes, there is a difference between MMA BJJ and No Gi): Jacare, Maia, Roger.

My thanks all!

Something tells me Jacare has a bright future while Roger is going to look bad, bad, bad once he encounters someone who can cancel out his BJJ and has superior striking.

Roger has the best pure bjj as stated. He needs to go to a better MMA camp where he can improve his striking and wrestling. Jacare is the best MMAist out of the three.

Jacare just because of his overall muscle strength on top of being one of the top dogs in the world of BJJ.

Exactly what happened when he went up against King Mo in Strikeforce: Barnett vs Kharitonov. He got KO'd.

Jacare is very capable of going on a similar streak in UFC due to his takedowns and striking making his BJJ more useable. Roger is not as he sometimes struggles to get fights down and does not have great striking. All three have competed in grappling before with Maia holding a win over Jacare and Jacare and Gracie going 3-2 with each other with Gracie wining 3 (although Jacare's win was kind of marred by his stalling after Gracie broke his arm imo)

1 out of 3. And that was the closest match.

I still put maia above Jacare on pure bjj.
Jacare has better takedowns

Roger's style will not get him far in the division imo. anyone with more than decent TDD can thwart him

Plus, since Jacare lost to Rockhold, he has definitely stepped up his game and has become quite the aggressor/ring general in the cage.

First post nailed it IMO

Roger has the best BJJ but perhaps the worst overall game of the three. I think he could improve his striking a lot if he really commits to it, he's a tall guy with a good reach. Good natural advantage for a striker.

Jacare is already more improved in the striking department than Maia ever was.

TS question really only applies to Roger and i still think Roger isnt fully commited to MMA

MMA: Jacare > Maia >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Roger
Pure BJJ: Maia > Jacare >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Roger
