Do you or anyone you know have any experience with the Peace Corps??? Its something I've strongly been considering doing for the last year or so and now that graduation is around the corner, I'm working on getting my app submitted.

Any info/opinions welcome.

Considered it, but not ok with them throwing me anywhere, I'd to choose. Heard horrible things about their management and ability to get you out of a sticky situation... Hopefully you aren't a girl.

I know it's majority women that do it. Looks good on the resume.

You're not thinking of raping anyone in the Peace Corps are you, Bme?

Had a friend that did it solely to pay off her student loans. She is now working at starbucks.

I really considered doing this for a while so I did a ton of research.

You can end up anywhere they want to send you. Kind of exciting and kind of scary at the same time.

It will be challenging no matter where you are. If you have that idea that it's all joints in the jungle you're going to be dissapointed.

You're more likely to be accepted if you have some sort of skill they need.

Some of the possible locations could be dangerous.

Most of the people involved are cool people. A largely diverse group of people too.

You wont exactly be rich while you're doing it. You're promised to have living conditions as good, if not a little better than the people from wherever you are.

Chances are you wont be parachuted into the desert with no contacts, but sometimes the closest pc contact could be a day or two away.

They'll get you home as fast as they can if there;s an emergency.

They give you about enough money to get a cheap apartment and live long enough to find a job when you get home.

You shouldn't take to many things with you. You might be doing a lot of walkjing when you get there. "They try to warn you about stuff like that".

If you have a special lifestyle IE vegetarian or something you might not be able to sustain it in some of the places you could go.

You can get student loans diferred to join.

Eh. Can't think of anything else right now.

I forgot this one. They tell you to wait for your assignment. It can sometimes be months before they call you and when they call it's a short time before you leave.

I talked to a bunch of people who were in it on a website. Some people loved it and some people hated it. A few people had been doing it for more than ten years.

i would've done it. if not for my hatred of helping strangers, i would've done well in it.

been thinking about doing it myself. the damn deadline is the end of this month though and i just started my application recently. for some reason i can't get it to work on my home pc either, so i can only work on it from school.

personally, i don't care where i go as long as it's not africa or the middle east.

nice breakdown crane
Thanks

Is there a deadline every year? Or to apply in your area? I can't remember how it works.

Thanks for the input.

I definitely don't have any qualms of really going anywhere as long as it's safe. At first, I was concerned about going to places like Africa, but after thinking about it, I thought how much of a unique experience it would be. Part of my wanting to do this is also as a personel challenge, to be able to overcome certain obstacles and such.

pretty sure it's every year. it's on the home page. deadline is the 28th to leave by early 2014.

I'm really working on getting mine submitted before the 28th. Only thing I need to finish are the essays.

My brother is currently over in Senegal right now and he's enjoyed his experience so far. He's had a few issues with the host family he was placed with when he first got there and some issues with their bank screwing up his pay shortly after he first got there. Which led him to have to beg his fellow peace corps people for money for a couple days because it got screwed up over a 4 day weekend when the banks were closed. He's told me that pretty much whenever a group of peace corps volunteers get together, they usually end up drinking a lot. hahaha. He's still got a long time left over there so I don't have to much beneficial info to you to give about what it's like when you get there. The application process can take some time, so you need to be really committed if it is something you want to do. He decided november 2011 that he wanted to do it and put in his application. He had a degree in ecology and a degree in french, so that was a big plus for him and got the ball rolling for him a lot quicker than it might have for other people.(He's in Senegal which is a french speaking country and his job will be building stuff for farming or doing something farming related, so his degrees certainly helped him get chosen for this place) He had his interviews in the spring of 2012 and they gave him a list of things he needed to do before they could send him over there. One of the things was that they wanted him to get more forestry/farming experience. So he had to get in contact with some people we knew and he worked with them over the summer last year. Then mid september 2012, he was off to Senegal for 2 years.

Honestly, Peace Corps work is pretty tame.

i know someone who was in Kyrgyzstan for two years. i hear that it looks good on your resume, but she's been back for almost a year and is still applying to jobs while working part time at Banana Republic.
