Paulo Costa highlights - ERASED!

Costa is way more technical than it looks at first glance. He is very diciplined in his muay thai style. Hands aways up, mixes up combos, pick his shots.

His defence is underrated, see the yoel knockdown, both throw at the same time but costa keep his right hand up as he throws and absorb yoel's punch.

That muay thai style uses more an active guard and blocking than facy head movent, and he has the phisycality to use such a guard. He blocked 3 headkicks from bangbose in a row like it was nothing. That same kick knocked out Warley Alves despite fully blocked.

He just don't have an aestetic style nor is quick and clean, but is far from a brawler.

Edit: lots of typos, forgive me, Im drunk.

I've noticed he's always got his feet planted, always square to his opponent and doesn't overcommit on his shots. You'd think a guy built like him would be stiff and robotic but he's actually very elastic and strings together combos very nicely.

I don't know if he's far from a brawler, his defense is kinda muscle based but yeah, his offence if one of a calculated savage.

He attacks without holding back, but at the same time he does pick his shots.

He understands how jacked he is, therefore he is very calm while being super aggressive.

He doesn't really do combos, cause combos end with the power shot most of the time. He does combos where every shot is the power shot.

Someone needs to do a highlight video and add a "fuck you" sound effect each time he lands.

Yea he won against Yoel, but he also got f*cked up by Uriah Hall for the most part of their fight.

The smaller cage is in Costa's favor, but Izzy should beat him up, all things considered.

And lol @ the people claiming Izzy is a (pure) counterstriker.
His fight against Yoel was literally his first fight which looked like this.

No, he didn't get fucked up by Uriah Hall for most of their fight, he just ate a few jabs that busted up his lips. But for most of the fight Uriah was backed against the cage, panicking and trying to escape and getting beaten down until his body just quit on him.

Also Izzy was almost exclusively countering against Brunson and Whittaker, so you're pretty much wrong on all accounts.

Natty goat, eraser, kob, call him what you want. After the Izzy fight you call him champ as well.

After the Izzy fight there's nothing left to prove at mw. He will move up and erase Jon Jones. Both stickmen should run for their lives.

No need to get unfriendly just because you're disagreeing.
<{1-7}>
And of course, the more offensive Israel's opponents are, the more he's countering.

He's not as reliant on counters as someone like Anderson Silva though.

Fucked up by Hall for the most part?

Re-watch the fight, lad.

What can play to Costa's advantage is that his whole offensive game is really tight. He doesn't really lunge or explode. He's pretty much in your face the whole time and doesn't give space to counter, nor does he unbalances himself. That's what cost Whittaker the fight against Adesanya.

I think Izzy will have trouble setting up his counter shots that come from outta nowhere if Costa pressures him and stays in close quarters. Now, in the 4th and 5th, it's a different story. If Costa gasses, Izzy might not be afraid of his power (cuz Izzy haaates getting hit more than a lot of fighters, not a chin question, just visibly doesn't like it), and then maybe Izzy will start exchanging more like in the Gastelum 5th round.

very good point, Izzy starts to panic once he gets hit. When Costa was getting hit by Romero, he was actually pressuring and going forward even more. I love this fight, can't wait
