The "National Report" founder, amongst many other political hoaxes, famously made fake ads on Craig's List claiming to pay left wing protestors up to $3,500 dollars, then wrote stories citing those Craig's List ads, which were widely shared among Trump supporters.
He gave the following quote to CNN:
"I hate Trump, but I'm making $10,000 a month from Google powered ads because of him. I do it to try to educate people... I mean, that's the way it always works. Someone posts something I write, then they find out it's false, then they look like idiots. But Trump supporters-- they just kept running with it! They never fact check anything! Now he's in the White House... There's a lot of humor in it."
Edit: Phoenix police say he had a history of abusing prescription drugs and there is no evidence of foul play
