Past or Present: Who is the USA version of Kazushi Sakuraba? He was a fan favorite and beloved hero in Japan. I cannot create a poll, some All-American fighters are below. I think Hughes is the closest thing we've ever seen.

    Matt Hughes

Based on his following and reputation I have to go with Couture. Hendo is close, but Couture seems to be beloved by everyone.

    randy or maybe Hughes

Hendo made his name in UFC tournaments and Rings tournaments when nobody really knew about them

I think Sherk and Franklin deserve a mention too

Im thinking Hendo because out of the list he's the only one who can take a beating like Sakuraba did and still submit guys.

Well done sir. Personally though, I think of Hendo as the most popular American fighter.

    Randy.

I dont think its even close. Couture is a LHW and a HW, and his career while being great is not void of losses and neither is Sakuraba's.

Couture started a lil later than Saku, and he wasn't a big star until later but their career's seem the most similar and both are pretty well respected.

No fighter from the US approaches the folk hero status of Saku in Japan and on these boards.

I think he meant arguably get outgrappled and still win a bunch of fights by decision during most of his early career
