I figured the people around here would enjoy these vids. I'm all for not tapping to chokes in major tournaments . . . but WOW some of these guys got choked the f**k OUT

I've never been to a major tournament but you can bet your ass I would tap! The brain needs blood...

Wow, I gotta say that was a little intense to watch. A little slap in the face as to how dangerous this sport really is and how important constraint and good refereeing is.

Good vids though!

I don't know how this makes the sport more "dangerous", all of those people were fine once revived. Obviously if no one stops the match it could get hairy, but that applies to most combat sports.

I also found that kinda hard to watch.. as normal as it is lol.

The best part is when they focus on the person afterwards. They always have a goofy smile and the underlying pride that they pushed themselves so hard.
The thread title should be
Jiu-jitsu... it works bitches.

Anaconda's a big man for stepping up and posting HIMSELF getting choked out. Bravo my friend bravo!!

That's exactly my point. If the fighter doesn't stop and the ref let's it go on too long, there's easily a chance for damage. There's a fine line between a "safe" chokeout and brain-damage.

I think its only dangerous if you hold the choke for 2 to 3 minutes after the guy is out, other than that its safe

One minute is way too long and dangerous to hold a choke IMO. I think a person should release a choke within seconds of unconsciousness; if you really need to put someone out and run away or something, then within say 10-20 seconds, but definitely sooner if the guy isn't your mortal enemy.
I got kinda choked out in class last week on an extremely tight collar choke (it was a face-up clock kind of choke) which I was having trouble tapping to, lol... my first reaction when I feel imminent danger is to say "tap" and of course this didn't work, all I got out was "t-" which my opponent obviously didn't hear, and one hand was in the collar choke so that hand wasn't an option, and the other hand was kinda stuck between me and him and I forgot I could try to tap with my feet (I never even think of tapping with my feet plus I don't know if it would be noticed ), but I managed to tap with that hand that was kinda stuck. Even though it only took a couple seconds for me to convey the tap, I was almost out by the time my opponent released the choke, I just lay there for a second with my eyes closed until he asked "r u ok" and then I got up right away.

why is it thaqt judo ref's never notice the choke or don't care about it?

I'm sorry but it speaks volumes about our sport when you see a guy choke out his opponent and walk away without the ref stopping it, then he turns right back around and helps bring the guy back to life. Sportsmanship at its best.

And does a gi choke scare the shit out of anyone else? I'm a blue and some of that shit is so advanced there would be no way I'd see that choke coming at me.

And in that first video, that last match, what was the ref doing? The guy was obviously out from the top triangle, but he's gonna let him hang around and get armbarred? That's how ppl get injured.

lol, i noticed that too

in every other case the ref runs over and tends to the passed out guy. The judo refs just stand around

Wow, bro, that's fucked up, but it takes a real man to post this stuff up, so much respect.

I went to my first tourney last month, and in my first match, the guy had me in a collar choke, it was the first time I pretty much passed out; although it was for less than a second, till I got fucking scared and tapped. I now see what you guys say, that you pretty much don't feel it tight at all, and then you go to sleep.
