I am moving to the Pasadena MD in the next couple months and I am looking for a Jiu Jitsu gym in the area. I have done a bit of research and a few folks have recommended:

ground control Ground Control Academy - jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts in Baltimore, MD
&
Crazy 88 BJJ Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Baltimore, Maryland's Elite Jiu Jitsu Program

I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience with either of these facilities, or has any suggestions for any others in the area. I plan on visiting a few to get a feel for each gym, but I would like to get a few outside opinions as well.

Depends what you want ground control is better for no-gi and mma while crazy 88 is more of a gi school.

Any particular reason why?
one of my best friends goes to crazy 88 and is on the competition team. he is coming along pretty well. aside from that, i've met some guys from ground control that were real assholes and i've just heard some negative things about the gym and the way its run. i'm not gonna go into detail about them because its not my place to spread what may be rumors online.

Ivey League is way closer than both to Pasadena and taught by a really good black belt, who I used to train with. I highly recommend them! IveyLeague Welcome Page

Edit: Just looked at the website and think the address is wrong - or about to be. I heard they moved (or are moving soon) to Severna Park.

It makes total sense that you would bash a gym and then not provide any substantiated evidence to support your claim.

Oh, but I'm not going into any detail -- I'm just going to libel a business.

To the OP:

There are several good gyms in the area, and it's (the gym you choose) really a matter of geography and personal fit.

I have checked out several gym's in the area: 88's, GC, Ivey League, and John Garfield's place (in annapolis). All provide good instruction.

Ultimately, make your own decisions, don't listen to clowns in the internet.

Thank you for the information so far guys. It does look like Ivey league is moving Severna Park, the blog portion of the website said it goes into affect today. I had not seen anything on Garfield BJJ so thank you for pointing me there. I will get in contact with both of those gym and add them to my little tour.

I am from Maryland and i have some BJJ buddies there.. I think one goes to the crazy 88 spot. Ill see.

I would definatly go to 88 thats where I go and it is an awesome school. But if Ivey League is closer than go there cause Danny Ives is an awesome instructor. He teaches down at 88 sometimes. But whechever you choose you cant go wrong with lloyd irvin.

You're getting a biased opinion because these people train at 88 and of course there going to promote there school. Go check them out and decide for yourself.

This is an unbiased opinion. biggamehit got me over here...anyways

I train at Crazy 88 bjj and I am on the white belt competition team. I also have friends and my brother's friends who train at Ground Control. 88 is awesome and I love everything about it. The instructors, classes, ownership, team....it's all great!

Now Crazy 88 does not offer a "MMA" class but do offer Muay Thai Boxing, No-gi and Gi of all levels. I am not going to add in hearsay of Ground Control because I have never been. You should definitely do a trial though.

I have multiple free passes to Crazy 88 if you are interested pm me or something and I'll give one to you to tryout and get some more info. If anyone here is from GC I am sure they could steer you in the direction to check out the facility as well.

I typed a whole long paragraph but it didn't post...anyways biggamehit got me over here and in my unbiased opinion you should always try both out.

I train at Crazy 88 and am on the white belt comp. team. I have some free passes if you are interested pm and i'll get some to you. You can never beat a free trial.

I will also throw my 2 cents in about Crazy 88.

It is a great school. Period, end of sentence.

As far as Ground Control goes, don't know much about them so I can't say. We have a lot of people who transfer over to us from Garfields though and they usually look like they are in over their heads. While I don't know anything firsthand about them, it definitely doesn't speak well for the instruction there.

Danny Ives, who runs Ivey League, is also a very good instructor. He teaches at Crazy 88 from time to time and there is a lot of cross-pollination between the two academies.

I can't say enough good things about Crazy 88 and Julius Park. You have 30 days free so just try us out.
