Basically, it's MMA.

A mixture of wrestling and boxing, where the only rules were no eye-gouging and no biting. And they were naked.

As said before, pankration was kind of an early mma. Most techniques were allowed.
Pankration had several very abusable rules which made the sport very short-lived amongst its athletes though.

For example, small joint manipulation was allowed, and fingerbreaking was a very common act during the fights. Also, tapping out was considered really shameful, so very often the fights would be stopped only after the other fighter was totally unconsious or beaten into a bloody pulp.
