Penny Mordaunt: Oxfam 'failed in moral leadership' - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43020875

Charity workers in Haiti used prostitutes and now there is a major backlash.

Why do prudish people's morals need to dictate what is acceptable?

People have sex, always have and always will. It's time that people mind their own business. These workers volunteered to go and help clean up the mess in Haiti. From everything I've read, I have yet to find an accusation of anyone using government funds to pay the prostitutes. All I've found is that the sex took place in the villa, which was financed by the government funded charity- an expense that was occurring anyway.

This story pisses me off. First of all, there was a group who went to help the people of Haiti. The could have told the Haitians to go fuck themselves and washed their hands of it, as many Haitians actually did. Many Haitians were granted a temporary stay in USA, but refused to return to Haiti after their visas had expired. They have abandoned their own country, which I find disgusting. No one is pointing the finger at any of them. TheHaitians who refuse to go back and rebuild their own country are not being criticized.

The only people being criticized are the volunteer workers.... Because they had sex?

Big fucking deal.

They volunteered? I assumed they were paid professionals.

Is this trolling? Prostitution is illegal, the girls were reportedly under age (age of consent is 18) and sex tourism is inherently exploitative.

I didn't read anything about them being underage.

That was the accusation. Oxfam did an "internal investigation" and apparently “It cannot be ruled out that any of the prostitutes were under-aged.”

"Cannot be ruled out". As in, unproven? You give me some concrete evidence and I'll believe it and I'll change my stance, after the evidence.

Prostitution should be legal and the workers should be thanked, not criticized for participating in adult activities.

The people who abandoned their own country are worse. They now have means to help Haiti but refuse. Why would another country take in disloyal people like that?

Haitian prosties? Talk about Russian roulette AIDS edition.

That was the accusation by the former workers that raised the issue. Oxfam fired/allowed to quit those involved. Their report to the Charity Watchdog "glossed over" the details of the allegations, including the findings of their own report. Mentioning that your workers are accused of hiring underaged prostitutes is somewhat important, even if your "internal investigation" couldn't locate the prostitutes and verify their ages. They then failed to ensure that those involved didn't receive references from members of their staff, and go on to work for other charities.

Your views on prostitution are also irrelevant to the fact that the workers committed crimes at the villas rented for them by Oxfam. International charities don't get to pick and choose which laws their workers comply with.
They were also senior staff, not "volunteers".

There seems to be a bunch of things alleged that I can’t make sense of.

First there’s use of prostitutes. I have no problem with that provided people are using their own money and having sex with apparently willing 18+ year olds. This whole “having sex with a blue baby donkey with a rainbow vagina cannot be ruled out....” well duh. Nothing can be ruled out can it? Unless every worker had a 24-7 camera on them.

But there’s also words thrown in like sexual abuse and :eek::eek::eek:philia. If anyone makes these kinds of allegations then I think it’s fair to be very specific about what has been alleged that is wrong. It’s silly to say that seeing prostitutes represents a failure of moral leadership. There are far worse things.

In principle I agree with you. In practice they logged a 120 complaints against them, and their are accusations of minors involved.

You don't get a 120 complaints for having regular sex with women for money.

Doing charity work doesn't give you the right to choke a bitch.

I read three different articles about this and none of them mentioned underage girls.

As I said before, if they were underage, I don't condone it.

Oxfam Employee: "I am so sorry that the earthquake destroyed your home; killed your family; rendered you unemployed, homeless, injured, and alone. But, I'll give you a few bucks if I can have sex with you."

Yeah, I'd say it's a big deal.

The reports about abuse and under age prostitutes (aged 14-16) came from other Oxfam workers. These were the allegations that sparked off their internal investigation and lead to those involved being fired.
Regardless of your personal views on prostitution, you have to admit that travelling to disaster struck areas and illegally paying survivors for prostitution when you're there to provide charitable aid, is inherently exploitative. Perhaps you've read about the prostitution of Syrian/Iraqi war refugees?
That's probably why it's against UN guidelines for charities and why Oxfam added it to their code of conduct.

Oxfam employee: "Even though it's not my country, I'll go down and do my best to try to clean it up, for the sake of Haitians. I realize that many actual Haitians could help, but they've fled and refuse to send funding or return to help their fellow countrymen. That's fine, I'm a good worker with a big heart and I'll help anyway. Oh, and in the evenings, in privacy, I may do adult things".

That's it. No more charity work for me.

Yeah I agree with that. Not a good look for sure. I just think the article is a bit convoluted.

Sex is not the problem. The problem is going to another country and exploiting underage prostitutes when the purpose is to be there to help.

who the fuck goes to haiti for the prostitutes? sounds like a suicide mission.

Don't commit illegal activities on foreign soil. Charity does not absolve you of that.
