Overeem was main eventing fight nights and bringing viewers.

They were paying him $800,000 a fight which is maybe $2,400,000 a year because he was pretty active.

Why didn’t they just offer him $400,000 a fight and cut him if he refuses to re-negotiate?

It makes the UFC look bad to cut impressive talent over a few dollars.

I mean, they might have already done that.

But then again I dont see the problem with him earning 800k. He beat four ranked guys in his last six fights and even when he loses it is in soectacular fashion and builds new contenders.

They could have. You know what they can't renegotiate? His brain damage.

that happened already. He was making 400k.

His last real reported payout was last year vs Harris in Florida, he got 400k.

Overeem said that he had 1 or 2 fights left on his contract and after that he was going to retire. So I don't think this was about being resigned. It was just that they didn't want to use him anymore. His performance was bad and they didn't have use for him to fight anyone else cos why give him a win over someone who still plans on competing after? And who would that even be?

Overeem said he was basically done anyway.

Overeem vs Fortune
Overeem vs Mowry

Overeem vs Vassell
Overeem vs Ayala
Overeem vs Keresh

Reem is like the second highest UFC earner to Conor.

Hunt was making over 700k in his last 5-6 fights. Ironically he was the most vocal about low pay but was one of the highest paid guys.

The price was too high for the quality of their most recent performances. UFC is cutting costs and it seems like they are getting rid of expensive non-title contenders. Which is understandable post covid. Their pay is equal to the whole pay or more than some fight night cards. That is just to expensive to keep at this current moment. This is good for Bellator. They still have name value if Bellator can afford them, and there is still some promising fights for them in that promotion.

Overeem was a Top 10 HW. But like most MMA fans, the OP is living in the past. That division has had a major infusion of younger talent recently. So, old has-beens who are raking in more than they deserve are no longer needed. Overeem has been waaaaaaaaaaaay overpaid and his last performance was disgraceful (the UFC should ask for at least half their money back!). Bellator (the WCW of MMA) will gladly overpay him to fight some other washed up HW, so there is no need to lament him being cut from the UFC.

Coulda woulda shoulda... Call Dana. Cry on the voicemail.

Cutting him means the newer & promising HW’s go up one in rankings and don’t run risk of getting derailed by fighting him. Makes sense for the HW division in UFC.

Lol Ive always caller PRIDE MMA'S "WCW". Bigger than its competition at one point, took all its competitors stars with deep pockets, stellar roster but terrible booking, tons of backstage politics, gets bought.

Surely they'll have to do Overeem v Fedor, should have happened in SF years ago until Werdum fucked it up.

Where does that number come from? I find it really hard to believe anyone would pay him $700,000 for one fight.
