So I’m really debating hard for my next shotgun. I have lots of rifles but limited to a few shotguns I actually use - Browning BPS in 20, a 70’s auto 5 in 12 and a Maxus 1 in 12g that is unreliable, even after an aftermarket spring. It’s kind of soured me off semis. I’ve had it to a gunsmith a few times and although I had it out last weekend again with no issues, I’d like to upgrade

I’m looking to get a gun that hopefully could do a bit of everything including shooting 3.5 if it’s also capable of shooting lesser rounds. That part isn’t as important.

I would like to recreationally shoot skeets, duck hunt and hunt some upland game with the same gun. I’m in Canada and our rules make you plug your semi at 3 for duck hunting anyways so I’m wondering if I should just get a nice semi instead.

Must have a synthetic stock. I love thé look of wood but I don’t want to bring it with me in the swamp land. No budget but I don’t wanna pay an extra 4k for some engravings or something for looks.

Any recommendations Sherbros? I’ve fired an a400 before and really liked it. The owner swears it’ll cycle anything. My uncle thinks the browning cynergy is right up my ally but he’s a die hard browning guy too.

"auto 5 in 12"

This is the one and only shotgun I own. Like Barry White said:

For your intended uses, a good semi auto is the way to go. Honestly I don't think there's a double made that would fit your needs, particularly synthetic and 3.5 chamber. Plenty of good semi auto choices out there, the A400 being one of them. Benelli and Browning both make nice semi autos as well. If you have a good gun store you can visit, I prefer holding a variety of guns to see which fits my "style" best. Some guns just don't feel right when you hold them, but everyone is different.
I'm guessing your issue with your BPS is failing to cycle low brass ammo reliably? That's a common issue, and pretty much standard for guns of that age. Their gas system just isn't "efficient" enough for low power shells. Most modern guns have no issue, as least after being broke in. They usually suggest running X amount of high brass ammo through a new semi before trying low brass, just to get everything broke in.

Yeah, it’s a fun/cool gun but it was my grandfathers and I don’t want to destroy what’s left of it. I do shoot targets with it but it’s mostly just a toy. I got the maxus to have a regular 12 gauge semi to use. I feel so let down by it that I don’t even want to buy a modern a5 tbh.

The maxus is the gun im referring to that doesn’t like to cycle and it’s failed to cycle just about anything. I’ve had it in a few times for work and just got it back not long ago again. I’m using my BPS pump a lot more these days. With an aftermarket spring put in by a gunsmith and higher brass ammo, it’s better but I still don’t really like or trust that gun. The old auto 5 is dependable.

I see the browning cynergy comes in a configuration I like. Synthetic stock, cerakote, nice camo pattern. I liked the a400 but wasn’t blown away with it. No local dealer to me sells the cynergy though. I’d really want to shoulder one to see the fit first. Seems like a small market with limited options. 3.5 isn’t a deal breaker. I don’t care about the price, I only want to buy one. I bought the maxus NIB for a good price and I hate it lol.

I have a Franchi Affinity. Depending on your budget it might fit the bill.

Okay, the Maxus makes more sense. The only BPS I was familiar with was pump action, but wondered if maybe they sold a semi under that name way back when. I misunderstood.

Have you asked any of the dealers? Most of them can get any gun you want, even if they don't carry them in stock. They all have a network of distributors they buy from and should be able to get nearly anything. Though that doesn't help you with finding one to hold before buying.

Those Modern A5s aren't the same.

I'm not up on shotguns but what if you went for some sort of Mossberg? Those are usually cheap, and durable enough to take into swamps and abuse.

I had a cheap Mossberg in the 80s I never treated it well, even lost it in a flooded creek for 3 weeks. It was rough and cobby but always worked.

To be honest, I’m not really looking to buy a “cheap” gun. I’d like to get value for my money but I don’t care about the price if it’s a good gun that I will only have to buy once.

I have an old mossberg bolt action 410 here and my girlfriend has a pump in 20 gauge. They’re good guns but I already have a pump gun. The only “local” dealer I have is a bass pro shop and a guy I don’t like who tries to sell turkish guns with no QC for normal pricing.

Some of those Turkish guns are well built for their price point. To be honest, any shotgun made will last your lifetime. The difference in prices come primarily from fit and finish.

Picked my maxus up from the gunsmith again. I fired 100 rounds through it over the weekend of various boxes and it never misfed one. This is promising. That new spring and some internal work seems to have solved the issue.

I’d like to fire a cynergy before I drop 3500 CAD on one.

To shoot dishes and for duck hunt imho better is 2 barrel simple but good quality stuff. Semi auto only if you want massive scale duck hunting.
