Ontario Progressive Conservatives Elect Doug Ford as Leader

By background:

Ontario is currently run by Liberal Kathleen Wynne, who is truly the most hated person in Ontario. Although, to her credit, the manner in which she cucked her husband has to be one of the funniest stories I've ever heard. (She was married with three kids, came out as a lesbian, her girlfriend moved in, and her husband moved to the basement. The Progressive Conservative party (despite the name 'Progressive' in its title) is Ontario's "conservative" party, and the main competitor to the Liberals. The party recently lost its leader, Patrick Brown, after he got #metoo'd, and so the party had to elect a new leader.

For the election, there were four major candidates: three sane ones, and Doug Ford -- brother of deceased comedy genius Rob Ford:




Like his brother, Doug Ford has been quite polarizing, and in many ways Trump-esque. He views and promotes himself as a man of the people, and is anathema to moderate conservatives. His victory has now put a huge wrench in the provincial election as many conservatives who would have likely voted PC, will now seriously consider voting Wynne as the lesser of two evils.

More cranes went up in Toronto under Rob Ford than any other mayor, the city BOOMED and everything was great. He was fighting the liberal beuaracracy. Doug would be a much better leader than Wynn.

Wynn has to go. Liberals have been the government too long and it needs a party change for fumigation and a reset of the party. BUT Doug Ford is a hot mess. Real fuck-up in NDP having their leader back for a third election after she finished last in the other two. I do think Ford wins because Wynn is so crud, and Liberals always win because of Toronto and Ford being a Toronto pol means they'll give him more consideration and votes.

Liberals and NDP need to mitigate the damage and hope Ford gets a minority so they can both change leaders and bring down the Ford Government in 18 months -2 years time.

The premier does seem to be pretty toxic right now, but I haven't been following closely enough to know if she's as bad as she is being portrayed to be.

Just for fun, I've just taken a look at what stories the various national papers are running about her and the liberals. The National Post fixated on a single issue (sound like a familiar tactic?) and just bash her on it over and over again. The Sun is more negative toward her than not but there was at least some broadening of coverage. The Globe and Mail, however, stands out as being able to give credit where it's due and still criticize where appropriate. If one were to read only their coverage, one would have to draw the conclusion that she's not at all as bad as the other papers try to paint her.

"We've said before that minimum-wage increases are necessary and fair. In the long run, the new rates in Ontario will be absorbed into the economy.

But Ms. Wynne acted irresponsibly by jacking the rate so quickly in her hour of political need. If some small-business owners are obliged to cut benefits and hours to make ends meet, that's on her. She ought to take responsibility, but she prefers to demonize the very people who have to muddle through the disruption she caused."

So, a mixed bag. I think if it were up to me, I'd still take her over anyone from the Ford family. They're simply untrustworthy.

The big issue is that the PC’s need to do more than get their parties base out to vote to win, they need to have People who voted Liberal last time vote PC this time, and this decision makes that significantly less likely.

If the PC’s manage to lose this election, people will blame losing Patrick Brown and such, but the decision on a new leader will be the real cause
