Economy Ontario gym owner on pandemic impact: 'We can't survive'

Well you’re not poor so it’s funny thinking of you sifting thought the dump for weights.

“Oh look 20 pound dumbbell next to those old diapers”
It really wasn't anything like that. I know someone who works at the university and told me that they very often throw away expensive medical and legal text books as well as office furniture. Some times he would call me to let me know something valuable was left so I would come by and grab it. I got all sorts of random ass things that I just sell.

One day he told me there were 8 45lb plates just left to the side of the dump there. Fuck yea im going to drive down there and pick that shit up. You know how much those things cost? I just looked on Kajiji and some people are selling a pair for like $200.

That's great; nice snag, sir. Does your local community not have a reuse-center?

Its depressing to think about how many useful and functional items are simply thrown out rather than being salvaged.

If you are privileged enough to live in a home that can accommodate a home gym setup it can be an absolute blessing. Very convenient and evidently cannot be shutdown.

I'm sorry for all the Sherbros who can't access the gym at the moment. Stay strong, guys.
I wouldn't call it "privilege"

i worked 2 jobs and went to college full time while i watched my father slowly die from cancer and had a pregnant wife.. then i busted my ass in the military and then the nypd and it was mostly 10-12 hr shifts 70hr work weeks where i barely saw my wife or son and took shit from people all day. I went to school at night while i worked as a cop during the day to get my bachelors ..

then after i had been stabbed during a domestic, had staples in my head from another arrest, and finally had to take someones life because they tried to take mine retire...

even then i still saved for 10 years paying off all my student loans and credit card debit because living in ny is moronically expensive, i finally bought a brand new home built for me and my family ...

but yeah i was "Privileged "

i used to work out in a space the size of a closet or my bathroom hallway with no weights just calisthenics.. between my 2 jobs and school

life is what you make it ... you either work for what you want or you get busy making excuses

i didnt even have a honeymoon because i had work the very next day and was in the middle of a college semester.. i dont piss my money away on new cars every few years or shit i dont need...

distribution of food is a necessity. you have to be a moron to think that if gyms should be shut down during a pandemic, so should a grocery store.

and yes, analyses have shown it is far more likely to spread covid in a gym or full-service restaurant than it is in a grocery store for multiple reasons. one is density of humans, two is static interaction time, and three is the fact that you cant wear a mask while eating and people increase respiration while exercising.

yes small businesses are suffering, especially small restaurants and gyms. ideally, governments are able to bail them out, though clearly many governments are either incapable or unwilling to do so to a sufficient degree.

simply letting them reopen and extending the duration of the pandemic and the magnitude of damage to human life it creates is not the solution. even without restrictions, many of these businesses will still go out of business because many consumers wont be returning even if theyre allowed to.

these are all talking points that anyone paying any attention has already hashed out months ago.
In Canada we had something called cerb coverage the issue and problem is that money ran out quick. That money ran out quick for bars and restaurants as well. In Canada dinning in is how they made more money for that industry.

Many places are now trying something by heaving outdoor dinning with a little roof on it..
That might work out well for some businesses. But i see your point on the gym part. Still i see little evidence of Gyms been super speeders of coivd.

I'm happy to hear that you've been so successful through hard work and dedication. In no way did I mean to imply that you are not deserving of whatever life you have built for yourself.

I'm sorry if you were offended by my comment that was not my intent.

You would cry if you saw what these people throw out and not only do they throw them out but they also discourage people from coming to pick them up. We are talking medical and legal text books that cost hundreds of dollars just thrown into the dump. Furniture, keyboards, books, fitness equipment. It's nuts!

im not ... it just brought up my struggle and maybe someone can read that and see that things are possible with hard work and effort

yeah people in NY would chuck perfectly good stuff all the time just to buy the "newer model" its crazy and down here in FL boomers are dropping like flies and their kids basically just give all their things away... the FB market down here is a goldmine

Typical covid coward idiocy.

By gov's own numbers, gyms responsible for 3% of the spread while schools 20%, schools still open. Also the morons let churches mosques temples ex stay open.

What a farce.

It just seems like a plan at this point to kill all the small businesses and just have big multinational corporations survive take over.

I'd be interested to see how many people on here treating the shutting down of all these businesses so callously are actual business owners. I imagine it's mostly students, people with BS gov't jobs, people dependent on their parents still, or other people with rather brainless and low-paying careers. Lots of philosophy majors I imagine.

So this is what gets me. All this talk about the "greater good" yet business owners are forgotten as part of the "greater good".

Also same ppl who love talking about mental health seem to completely ignore mental health of ppl during this pandemic. They seem to think they can shut down everything indefinitely and everybody goes into hibernation mode as long as necessary.

It typically failures in life that want them, this way their failure is not their fault it will be due to covid great excuses for bring bums. They are typical socialist's they want to ruin others out of jealousy.

Sprinkled a little fear mongering and voila.

there are many anecdotal reports of cluster spread at gyms. here is a publication with some modeling of actual data
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2923-3
if you open the pdf and look at extended figure 5d you can see the modeled increase in infections upon reopening of fitness centers based on user mobility data. it is second only to the reopening of full service restaurants.

I entirely agree that the disparity in the treatment of small businesses relative to the corporate giants is beyond unfair and will be ruinous for the middle class. That said, the assertion that people who support lockdowns are simply "bums" or "failures" is really unfair.

Many people are simply genuinely deeply concerned about the medical welfare of their friends and loved ones. I find it hard to believe that a significant number of individuals are maliciously hoping that locally owned businesses are destroyed out of spite.
