The amateur leagues in my area started this new thing where the matches have one round of (of course no-gi) grappling, and 1 round of kickboxing, alternating up to 5 rounds. The nature of the first round is randomly determined. Knees strikes are pre-negotiated.

It seems kinda stupid when you read it, but it really produces some well rounded fighters and exciting matches. The whole strategy and fight dynamic changes, very interesting stuff. The grappling is very fast paced due to the time limit, and the striking is very clean to watch. Been going on for a while now, but relatively new.

Thoughts?

That sounds pretty interesting. Do you think the switching between grappling/striking would be more tiring than just straight MMA?

Well if you do this, you don't have to plan for a takedown if your standing up, and you won't have to plan on getting hit while grappling. I think that if you have 5 rounds of MMA training with different people, who know beforehand how they're going to fight you. Like person A tries to stand up with you, person B tries to bring you down and GNP you, person C tries to grapple for subs, etc.

Also, MMA gloves and Boxing gloves are switched out between rounds.

There are takedowns in the standing portion,

Kinda shootboxing-esque rules, any type of standing throw/sweep can be utilized.

You might have a point about the ground and pound portion, but what novice/amateur wants to get hit on the ground when they are first starting out? Especially with grappling(MMA) gloves? Plus keep in mind this is amateur, it probably isn't within the safety guidelines.

I think the grappling only round gives them a chance to work on the submission under the pressure of a time limit.

Seems like a good deal for someone that wants to compete and get some experience, but not go pro right away. amirite?

It's a great premise, but as for me, i am pretty stubborn. I would probably take the long and hard way by learning Gi-Jiu jitsu, then no-gi and participating in some sub grappling tournaments. Maybe some wrestling/judo if i can find it.

I would also train in boxing and kickboxing and get a few amateur bouts or smokers under my belt (which i am working on right now).

Then join an MMA gym and train/fight with a good base to fall back on.

Then i would fight my idol Miguel Torres and take his belt.......yup.

But that would be the path i'd take if my goal was MMA, which it is not.

Thats like the Sapp/Lebanner fight.
They switched gloves in-between rounds
it was different

You talkin' about Shidokan? 'Cause it sounds almost like Shidokan comp to me...
