One Nation, Under Debt.

Funny store about debt and credit cards. When I started working in the US I opened a BoA account and they filled out a credit card application. I provided all of my work and canadian account information so they could do a complete credit check. I was turned down for a $5,000 credit card.

I own(ed) two house with no mortgage, no loans, no student debt, no debt of any kind, and my income (I'm pretty sure) would be considered 'high'.

Yeah. I've got one.

If you can give a synopsis of how that debt unwound the global financial system I'm sure plenty of us would love to read it. If you can fully explain it without hitting on the evolution of global finance and a lack of reach for regulation that'd be preferred. Investments lose money all the time. What made these so crucial that losses couldn't be taken?

Lack of savings fueled partially by foreign investment funneled into real estate through the mutualization of mortgages. Lot of institutional / corruption factors but personal debt lay at the heart of the r/e bubble. The idea that personal debt levels should be monitored because the are a measure of economic health is a pretty simple one, not sure where you are getting tripped up.

WE are in trouble financially. When the benefits run out, there will be riots in the city streets. Remember ripskater told you.

Why do u hate america so much? Maybe U should leave.

I don't. I just know where we are headed.

Well u def don't agree with the direction it is heading and has been heading for quite some time. The love it or leave it crowed really seems to be the most disloyal to America when things are not going their way.

I agree

If my brother was an alcoholic, I would tell him that it's no good and will eventually kill him. That doesn't mean I'm disloyal to him and don't care about him.

When do you think we made the wrong turn?

Except in this case we don't agree that he is an alcoholic. The differences are value based (actually more appeals to emotion but we can call it values), and you are essentially rejecting current American values. And I'm possibly straw manning you a bit here I just find it funny when conservatives complain so much.

Here is a recent conversation I had with a republitard

Me: I think the 1% should pay more in taxes, minimum wages should go up, we should do more for maternity leave.

Tard: sounds like u don't like it here, you should go back to Canada

Me: last I checked Obama agrees with me and won the last 2 elections, so maybe YOU should leave.

Tard: crickets......

Yeah, it's common for everyone to think that the real American values are the ones they agree with, but higher taxes on the rich and a MW increase, at least (I don't know about the other one) have very broad support. In April, Gallup asked whether taxes are too high, too low, or fair for "upper income people" and it showed up as 62% too low, 11% fair, 25% too high (with the remainder having no opinion). For corporations it was 69% saying too low. If you narrowed the focus to the top 1% of earners, support would rise even more. With regard to MW increasing, the latest poll I could find was from AP/GfK, and it had 60% support and 20% opposition with the rest neutral (even a plurality of Republicans favor that).

Both policies, interestingly, have far more support from the public than they do from politicians (I mentioned plurality support for a MW increase *among Republicans*, but I'd guess that a measure like in the Senate would get 0 Republican votes, and certainly a vote to increase taxes on "upper income people" would get 0 support from Republicans and possibly not even a majority among Democrats). So if we want to talk about Washington being out of touch with real Americans, the direction is in favor of the right in a big way.

It's been a while coming. The start of welfare which was a long time ago, getting prayer and God out of the schools. From there, we have been declining. We have been on a sharper decline in the 21st century.

Well we cannot sustain the socialism benefits. Every year the # goes way up. When the benefits are not there someday, things will not be pretty. It's gonna be chaos, riots in the city streets. And you can blame the way we are doing things in this country. More people need to be productive, and we are not encouraging that.

You could add things like the ACA to it as well. And again my main point is that when liberals complain they are traitors that should leave but when the right complains they are some how preserving values and freedumb. And as you say, the population is more liberal on many of these issues.

In what sense are we declining since, what, the start of Social Security?

Well we cannot sustain the socialism benefits. Every year the # goes way up. When the benefits are not there someday, things will not be pretty.

What benefits are you referring to and why can't we sustain them?

It's gonna be chaos, riots in the city streets. And you can blame the way we are doing things in this country. More people need to be productive, and we are not encouraging that.

So most of the people who aren't productive (that is, not working) are the elderly, children, the disabled, stay-at-home parents, and unpaid caretakers. What do you propose we do to encourage more child labor, less stay-at-home parenting, get productivity out of the disabled, and prevent old people from retiring? Repeal child-labor laws (that would also reduce the need for SAHPs), higher taxes on capital combined with an elimination of SS (and tax penalties for pensions)? We should also focus on ways to stop people from going to college, right?

You could add things like the ACA to it as well. And again my main point is that when liberals complain they are traitors that should leave but when the right complains they are some how preserving values and freedumb. And as you say, the population is more liberal on many of these issues.

Yeah, it's crazy. Just backing you up.

This post is really coming from a bubble. We don't have socialism, most govt spending does not go to the poor, most benefits go to the old or other segments of the middle class. Give the massive upward shift in the gini coefficient we have seen in the last decades, I don't see how socialism is an issue.
