It's crazy how long ago this was.

How many people even remember when Couture used to do color commentary before he had the contract fight with the UFC?

I still remember going to the UFC website with my cousin hovering over my shoulder after his fight with Leben and seeing the fan poll that would get him his title shot. I don’t even remember any names other Rich on that list because we were both like “Uh yeah that fight would be awesome”

Crazy how time goes so fast.

I remember before that fight Franklin was a guest on one of the ultimate fighter episodes. A fighter asked Rich what to do if you get in the muay thai clinch and Rich said just put a knee on the ground and they can't knee you. Quite ironic how his fight with Anderson went.

The longest and most dominant win streak/title reign in UFC history.

    And he's still fighting!

    Absolute legend.

I loved his commentary. And I loved back when Zuffa first purchased the UFC how they would have a fighter sit in as the third mic every show. Randy sat and called fights while the HW champ, Pulver called fights, Ricco called fights, Ken Shamrock called fights. After they phased out Frank Shamrock and Jeff Blatnick and before Rogan joined, fighters were regularly calling cards and Randy was great even back then. When he retired and officially started commentating regularly, I fucking loved it. Him and Bas always were and still are my favorite fighter commentators.

Speaking for myself, I knew that Anderson was dangerous, but I thought that Rich would be fine striking on the outside and would then outmuscle Anderson in the clinch and work a predominantly wrestling game. That's why Rich was so confident about the clinch: He thought, as many people including myself thought, that if it ended up in the clinch he'd be too big and strong and would be able to throw Anderson around just like he threw around Jorge Rivera and David Loiseau.

Especially coming off of dominating The Crow like he did, and given both the physical and stylistic similarities between Loiseau and Anderson, I figured the fight with Anderson would look similar: Rich would mix up the striking and the wrestling and just overpower and ultimately overwhelm Anderson.

    Then the fight happened.
