NBC Sports Network to televise U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials with next-day coverage on April 22 and 23 | TheMat.com - USA Wrestling
What's up grapplers?
The best wrestlers in the US will be on display in 2 weeks so check it out.
Some points of interest
-Cary Kolat will be making what is probably his last run at the Olympics. At 38 he dominated in the final OTT qualifier a couple of weeks back and is the most technically sound wrestler at the weight. Hopefully his speed, strength, conditioning and injuries won't slow him against Metcalf, Schlatter and Ware.
- 163lbs is freaking loaded!!!
At the top of the class is 2 time NCAA champ and reigning World Champion Jordan Boroughs. Jordan stormed onto the world scene after his 2nd NCAA title going undefeated in international competition. He defeated the Russian Targush.
Others competing at the weight are NCAA champs David Taylor, Kyle Dake and Andrew Howe. Stacked!!
-Kurt Angle is still insisting that he will compete at the age of 44 at 211lbs. Even if he does Jake Varner is the easy favorite taking bronze at Worlds last year in what is considered the deepest weightclass in the world.
-Sadly Cael Sanderson is allegedly not competing but I am crossing my fingers that he will.
If he doesn't all is not lost. Jake Herbert brought home Silver in 09 so he has shown that he can compete with the worlds best.
-HWT will most likely be 09 World Bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev who is capable of beating anyone besides Makhov ( I hope he can but Makhov on the big stage is an animal).
-121 will be interesting. 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo has said he will compete but has not been to any warmup tournaments and may not compete at all or may go up a wiegtclass. Hopefully he competes and at 121. Other Notables are Nick Simmons, Obe Blanc and Sam Hazwinkle.
- 132lbs is intersting because the US has not qualified the weight for the Olympics. Because of this top dog Reece Humphrey will skip the trials and go to a qualyfing tournament instead. If he qualifies the weight he will face the winner of OTTs at a later date in a best of 3 match.
This weight class has a lot of talent but is wide open. Humphrey had a fair amount of success at the Junior level against world comp and some success at the senior level and looks to have overtaken Shawn Bunch.
Shawn Bunch at one point looked like a sure fire medalist winning the Medved invitational in Russia but has not looked as hot lately.
The addition of NCAA champs Jordan Oliver and Logan Steiber should also be interesting
