NBC Sports Network to televise U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials with next-day coverage on April 22 and 23 | TheMat.com - USA Wrestling

What's up grapplers?

The best wrestlers in the US will be on display in 2 weeks so check it out.

Some points of interest

-Cary Kolat will be making what is probably his last run at the Olympics. At 38 he dominated in the final OTT qualifier a couple of weeks back and is the most technically sound wrestler at the weight. Hopefully his speed, strength, conditioning and injuries won't slow him against Metcalf, Schlatter and Ware.

- 163lbs is freaking loaded!!!

At the top of the class is 2 time NCAA champ and reigning World Champion Jordan Boroughs. Jordan stormed onto the world scene after his 2nd NCAA title going undefeated in international competition. He defeated the Russian Targush.

Others competing at the weight are NCAA champs David Taylor, Kyle Dake and Andrew Howe. Stacked!!

-Kurt Angle is still insisting that he will compete at the age of 44 at 211lbs. Even if he does Jake Varner is the easy favorite taking bronze at Worlds last year in what is considered the deepest weightclass in the world.

-Sadly Cael Sanderson is allegedly not competing but I am crossing my fingers that he will.

If he doesn't all is not lost. Jake Herbert brought home Silver in 09 so he has shown that he can compete with the worlds best.

-HWT will most likely be 09 World Bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev who is capable of beating anyone besides Makhov ( I hope he can but Makhov on the big stage is an animal).

-121 will be interesting. 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo has said he will compete but has not been to any warmup tournaments and may not compete at all or may go up a wiegtclass. Hopefully he competes and at 121. Other Notables are Nick Simmons, Obe Blanc and Sam Hazwinkle.

- 132lbs is intersting because the US has not qualified the weight for the Olympics. Because of this top dog Reece Humphrey will skip the trials and go to a qualyfing tournament instead. If he qualifies the weight he will face the winner of OTTs at a later date in a best of 3 match.

This weight class has a lot of talent but is wide open. Humphrey had a fair amount of success at the Junior level against world comp and some success at the senior level and looks to have overtaken Shawn Bunch.

Shawn Bunch at one point looked like a sure fire medalist winning the Medved invitational in Russia but has not looked as hot lately.

The addition of NCAA champs Jordan Oliver and Logan Steiber should also be interesting

Sounds awesome will def try and check it out.

I hope I can somehow find a way to watch this

Kurt, give it up

Wasn't Rulon Gardner trying to make the team too?

Would it be great to see Terval or Steve mocco or one of the heavyweight Russian wrestlers in MMA in a few years?

Mocco is 30 and pretty serious about coaching so I don't see him doing it. The Russians also make good money in wrestling so they haven't transitioned over.

I would like to see Tervel try with his speed he could be deadly.

Some are speculating that Jordan Boroughs may go the MMA route if he wins gold the year.

The 197lb NCAA runnerup Chris Honeycut it also making the transition.

Great info and breakdown, thanks! Having struggled to follow the sport of wrestling back when I was actually wrestling, it's great to see it being aired on TV more nowadays, and having more of an online media presence in general. The more exposure the better!

I think MMA has helped that alot.

I wish USAW would embrace MMA more and advertise during UFC events. Whenever I watch any UFC event I see an ad for every BJJ club in the area but nothing from the wrestling clubs. They should embrace this sport because it gives the athletes a chance to go "pro" and can bring in fans.

I think they're coming around. Randy Couture signing books at the most recent NCAA championships? They know the popularity MMA can bring. But they won't talk about MMA really.

The problem is that they're caught in the middle. One one hand, MMA can help popularize wrestling. On the other hand, MMA can pluck wrestlers from wrestling right in the prime of their competitive careers. I'm sure USAW would rather have them compete for the US internationally than fight in a cage. So they're kind of caught in the middle.

I hear you. But at the same time they aren't stealing the best of the best. Those guys still have Olympic Dreams which are very strong and the Living The Dream Fund has added some incentive. i feel like the guys just a level below and who have done an Olympic cycle are going to MMA.

Now obviously this isn't the rule. Warren was in his prime but his Maryjane use forced him into MMA. Askren still had more to offer but i don't think he could beat JB.

I think the wrestling community is very accepting of MMA and like watching it but they haven't put their money into it to promote their own sport.

You may lose some guys when they are older who would rather do MMA, but you gain a lot in the youth program by associating yourself with MMA.

Also I have been a lurker for a while and I most say I am jealous about who you had as a HS coach

You must be thinking of someone else. I had several high school coaches, none of them for longer than a couple of years. One of them was a really great wrestler when he was competing, but I don't think you're thinking of me.

My bad I thought someone here had Don Behm as a coach. But I have lurked a few MMA forums so maybe I got confused

Just an update. Cale Sanderson and Kurt Angle are officially not competing this year.
