Hey guys my Muay Thai gym is starting to offer BJJ classes taught by brown belt (recevied in 2009) Luis "Wicho" Giron. He is currently trained under Profesor Josef "Ze Cobra" Manuel (Robson Moura's 1st American Black Belt).

Since he is not currently a Black Belt, what are your opinions on training under Luis? I assume he is close to receiving his BB as he was Brown Belted in 2009. I have zero experience in BJJ/grappling and 4 years on and off for Muay Thai.

thanks

yep, i'm currently training bjj under a brown belt...heck, there's some blue belts i wouldn't mind being trained under. what REALLY matters is the level of instruction...can the instructor teach? performing is one thing, teaching is another...

thanks for the responses...anyone familiar with Luis Giron or his teachers "Josef Manuel/Robson Moura?

Perfectly said!

belt upon contrary belief isnt a testamate to teaching ability or even ability. People need to stop worrying so much about belts and worry more about jiu jitsu

Training under anyone better than you who can teach is fine as you'll always be improving.

Ull be fine just now you could train under a 2 stripe white belt and learn something !

Great post. Being capable of performing is not the same as teaching and that is the most important thing to remember. A good way to judge someones understanding and dedication to the sport is to ask how long he has been training BJJ and under who. Then you try to find an estimate on how long it "usually" takes to get a BB from there and then you will have your answer.

I know brown-belts who can't teach at all and I know blue-belts who are great at it. The brown-belt totally wrecks the blue-belt on the mat though.

Shemhazai here on the forum is f*cking brilliant when it comes to teaching and understanding techniques etc. I don't know what belt he is but I wouldn't mind changing from my gym to his if he opened one even if he is a white-belt.

Danaher is a great coach but a shitty(compared to his teaching) fighter.

At the end of the day it all comes down to their ability and motivation to teach and create great grapplers.

Never trained BJJ? anything will be better than nothing.

Brown is fine though, the heck purple are good too. By purple they already know most of the techniques and they just need to drill and improve their execution, rather than the knowledge of techniques.

My coach was a brown belt when I started, and now he is a black. You'll be fine, especially in the RMNU lineage.

i train under 1 black and 2 brown belts. I learn from all of them and even students with lesser belts.

The only reason to worry about the belt of the person teaching you is to make sure that they have a legitimate connection to a BJJ black belt and are authorized by that person to teach and make promotion recommendations.

Otherwise, what matters is if the person can teach. I'm under a purple and brown belt.

thanks for the input...i'm very excited to start BJJ

it's something i've wanted to do for ages just never had the time or money....now i do:D

I dont think it really matters as long as he is a good teacher.

Yeah brown is fine. Generally depends how good of a teacher someone is though.

I train under a Carlson Gracie/Andre Monteiro brown belt, and when he isn't able to train usually we have another brown belt or purple belt train us. Either way its all knowledgeable
