I am doing interviews with quite a few pro BJJ or MMA guys, like Marcelo, Joe Camacho, Dean Lister etc.

Now, what sort of S&C questions would you like to see me possibly ask>?

Oh, man, where to start . . . :)

What particular strength exercises do you feel have helped you with your performance in the ring or on the mat?

Out of those, if you could only do one, which would you do?

How often do you train for strength in the off-season and when preparing for a fight?

How important is strength training to your success?

Then ask all the same questions for conditioning.

OK, great, i liked all of those. i want a wide variety, most people never touch on that with interviews, and they know that those will be my main questions.

i think one of the biggest questions is the one that I am facing now...

Right now I feel like I need to build up serious strength, but I don't have the time between competitions to really do that. I am always dieting and working on conditioning and never have time to really focus on putting on muscle and strength. I feel like my performance in a comp would suffer. Did they ever run into this problem or anything similiar?

I can tell you now a lot of them have that problem. I work with a few amateurs in that boat. but I will ask them that as well.

if you can give me an answer to it from the amateurs that you work with, let me know! I'm thinking of taking off a few competitions and just continuing going to practice and lifting. Right now my strength is pathetic and needs to be improved upon before I start competing seriously.

I'll write something up on it this weekend. I just had a PM covering the same sort of subject.

Maybe before asking questions you could ask them to describe the process that a fighter goes through. Say from post fight routine (offseason) to fight. Of course this will vary based on the time in between. Ask for the frequency and infrequency of time periods.

Ex. Look at Liddel, he fights maybe 2x a year versus some others who are 4x. Amateurs maybe even more.

I'd assume their training emphasis varies based on the amount of time prior to a fight.

There was an excellent article/interview by Alwyn Cosgrove? going over a lot of this. I would think you would want to read it before the interview. I'll have to look for it.

Alyn and I don't work together lol. Most people that will read mine are of a different viewing group, and that's great. I will check it out, but the similarities will be very small.

Which exercises do you emphasize in your training and why?

How has your strength training changed over the years?

What would be your advice for fighters starting out in strength training?

How does your strength training change from offseason to inseason and vice versa?

Actually he was one of 3 people being interviewed, I thought he was the interviewer.

Thought the article may spurn some questions for you. If not sorry.

Im curious about how they are blending their strength work with their conditioning.

How did you build your basestrength and what are your mainexercises today?

Sample of trainingplan and routines, in and off season.

I'd really appreciate it if you asked how they balance and structure all their different types of training: cardiovascular, explosive power, maximal strength, strength endurance, etc.

Coach, you got to ask them the question we all be dieng to know, how much they bench. Seriously though, if you could find out what they do on the squat, dl and bench it would be cool. Ive always been curious what guys in my weight class can put up, or any weight class for that matter. Despite being a forbiden topic here, askin how much xfighter lifts, I feel its important to know what the competition is doing. Not that I will ever fight a top level guy but if im as strong as a top level guy I shouldnt have to worry about that aspect of the game against lower level guys.

I'll ask. It's my interview right lol. I will just ask the big three if they even do them. I am sure quite a few won't.

Here's a quote from the interview:

Martin Rooney:
I have been lucky to be working with many of the top MMA and Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners in the world for the last 5 years (Renzo Gracie, Ricardo Almeida, Rodrigo Gracie, Sean Alvarez, Roger Gracie, and many others). I have set up everything from their physical training, to nutrition, to strategic development, to even help corner them at events such as Pride, UFC, and the ADCC world grappling championships all over the world. I currently am on the editorial counsel for Gracie Magazine in Brazil and write all of their training columns. I am also a 2 stripe blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and am currently training wrestling and Muay Thai as well.

All of the last 5 years of experience have led to my newest book

I like Martin, I have read a lot of his work. I won't be interviewing any Gracies:)

Get his training schedule/stragety. What is his training broken down into (strength, conditioning, grappling, striking, yoga, ect). How he schedules his sessions throughout the week, and how his trainings change according to how close his next fight is. For example, does he do more conditioning as the fight comes closer, less strength, ect).

Also get what each exersices he does for strength, conditioning, anything else (like polymetrics). For example, does he do a 20-rep squat, or 5x5 squat.

Thanks in advance.
