I've always incorporated both in my routines and will continue to do so. I'm curious why OHP is emphasized much more in combat sports than Bench Press. I've heard that bench can slow your hands down etc., but I've never seen research or anything proving this. Any opinions?

Q: I thought technique was more important than strength. Is lifting heavy weights really important for MMA?

A: Technique and skill is the most important things if you want to be successful as a martial artist, however to completely ignore S&P would be very foolish, when skill levels are equal it is often the stronger and better conditioned fighter that will win, otherwise there would be no point in weight categories.

Q: Won

Did you the read whole question?

Well I imagine in certain clinches you'll be pushing with your hands by your head, not out at your chest.

Alot of situations when grappling call for you to push an opponent, not exactly in the same manner as a bench press but similar.

Well where did you hear that OHP was more important than bench? I'd imagine they're both fairly important.

This debate is so old, and so drawn out that it is to boring for me to type about lol

Just to clarify I'm not saying that OHP is more important than Bench, however it does seem as though it is emphasized much more in workout routines designed for combat sports.

For example in football routines bench is emphasized much more for obvious reasons (constantly attempting to push people off of you).

I can see OHP being empasized more because it works more body parts at the same time, possibly.

I know I've read similar threads about this too (couldn't find any when I searched though), just looking for more opinions.

Just found a great thread about this started a month back, questions answered.

Basically, OHP works more parts of body than bench, OHP can help improve Bench but Bench doesn't help OHP, ect.
