"off" nights in the gym...what's the deal?

This is far more detrimental then beneficial...

When you are half-assing it, bad habits are instilled.

In one sense... yah its good to power through... don't make a habit out of this. Listen to your body and take a day off or two when its called for
 
Ha I feel like you were at my fight team sesh yesterday. This is how I felt, like I've regressed and I couldn't be more frustrated at myself. It's all what you take away from it and surrounding yourself with a good support team helps. It's important to get in there and learn from those days. If you took a good beating, use it as motivation and inspiration that you have a good team to push you even when you're not feelin' fresh. I love my team and wouldn't know what I'd do without them. Just push through, shower up, and relax and reflect on what went down and make it positive.

EDIT to Pope's point it is good to take that rest day, being too exhausted can lead to injury this applies to mental and physical, sometimes you need to refresh your body and mind.
