October STRENGTH & Conditioning Challenge
Clean + Press Ladder @ 65% BW within 7 minutes

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pretty self explanatory... You will start with the bar down, clean it, and press it. Each rep will be one clean and the press will ladder to 8 reps then you will reset back to 1 and restart the ladder... So you will clean the bar up to start every rep... Once you're through all 8 power cleans and 36 reps of press, 8 ladders. If you fail a rep, you can reset that rep and restart. You do not have to restart the whole set.
ie:

clean + press
(bar down)
clean + (2) press
(bar down)
clean + (3)
(bar down)

Up till 8 presses then you will reset back to 1 rep clean x 1 rep press and ladder back up. Winner will be determined by most ladders done. Keep track of how many reps into the set you go to determine tie breakers. Jerk is okay with me for those who can't strict press or are more comfortable jerking. Here is a quick instructional for a clean + press for anyone wandering what we are looking at...

AND of course, any whitebelts with crazy claims.. Please use your phone, your camera, anything and record it. We were all there once and cheap cameras cost as little as 29.99 these days. Good investment and why not record yourself in a feat of strength? Here's a link from the thread that came to this challenge to see if any questions have been answered.. if not ask. http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f13/october-conditioning-challenge-suggestions-1839293/

Sounds good, just a couple of questions.
1) You mentioned that it must be a clean, but the video showed someone deadlifting (poorly) and then doing a hang power clean (well really a bent arm reverse curl). Does it have to be a squat clean? Can we power clean or muscle clean it? Does form matter for purposes of counting something a missed rep?

2) Since it doesn't matter whether it is a press or jerk, I assume split jerks are just as legal as push jerks?

For those interested in a slow mo video of some pretty good squat clean and push jerk action, you might want to check this out.

Definitely not going to do as well on this one as the last one. Just don't have the overhead strength for it. Sigh.

can it be a power clean and press? Im thinking of doing this one. And if I do I'll record it.

I'll be trying this Tuesday. Have no idea in terms of expectations though.

The clean is just the first part of every rep... It doesn't have to be a squat clean... All I did was clean then press.. Any jerk is fine with me. I had to go more of a split towards the end of my set to get the weight up.. Form should be OKAY but I sure as hell won't be strict about it. I know my bad form probably got much worse at the end of the 7 minutes, lol.

Yes. Just make sure per rep your doing the specific amount of reps in the press part. One set is 8 cleans + 36 presses.

I just did it... I'll post a video when uploaded.
Thoughts:
-It was much more difficult then I had thought.
-Finished one set in the whole 7 minutes. Had the first 5 done in like 3 minutes.
-Switched to a more narrow grip on the last two sets and split my legs apart helped.
-I'm interested to see what monster can make 3 sets of this.
-My goal is officially two sets.

So were you only able to complete one set? It does seem like the jerk or press part is going to suck after a while.

Yeah. My shoulders were on fire. I lift but I def run/bike more. My lifting consists of a 2 day split with the 3 main lifts. I very rarely do any pressing outside of bench.

I'll wait to say okay to that... We'll see how others feel. I'm weak when it comes to pressing so if it isn't "that hard" for others than we can leave it at 8. If everyone struggles with 8, we'll go to 5. I don't want to be the judge on what reps are what because this isn't my strong point so I don't want to say yes to 5 and sound selfish.

Just one last time for clarification - the very first set with 1 rep will be from the floor. If I recall correctly, you said that you do not have to put the bar down after that and can hang clean. So can I basically do the following:

-power clean + 1 push press
-hang clean + 2 push presses
-hang clean + 3 push presses

etc.

It's now reading like we have to put the bar down.

Ok, so you will clean the bar up and do 1 press, push press or jerk. Put the bar down, clean the bar up do 2 presses or the other 2, put the bar down, clean and then do 3 presses. So your final set will be 1 clean and 8 presses, push presses or snatches. You continue doing this until you hit 8 sets. It is more of a shoulder work out than a clean workout.

Yeah bar down before every rep. I posted a video of me doing it. If everyone wants to take it down to 5 reps, I'm game. It will less of a shoulder workout that way.
Clean + Press
Clean + 2 Press
Clean + 3 Press, etc.

OK, there seems to be a bit of confusion here. I'll just tell you what I did today

Using 135lbs...
1 clean + 1 push press
bar down
1 clean + 2 push presses
bar down
1 clean + 3 push presses
made my way to the set of 8 then restarted at 1 then made my way to the set of 3

So this means I did 51 reps in total, or 11 sets. I think maybe we should use one of those totals instead of this round thing. Nobody but Oblivion will get more than 1 round lol

I took a video but Im at Starbucks right now and the internet is being really slow, may not be able to get it up on the tube before it closes

Yeah we can do reps. So I did 46 reps.

65% of bodyweight... for me, that is 84% of my 1RM. Way, way too high for a conditioning challenge. I think it would need to be half of that at the absolute max.

It's more of a "Strongman style high-rep feat of strength challenge" than a conditioning challenge. Still, if that is what people want....

Yeah mine is close to that. I've never 1RM on press so I wouldn't know but I would think I could get 135 up. So 105 is 77% of my rm. I'm fine with it though, I just wanted to get a challenge rolling because the suggestion thread just kept spinning with 100's of ideas and the only one anyone agreed on was this.

Fair enough. And well done for putting the effort in to get it going.
