Ocasio Cortez compares debating to catcalling, refuses to debate Ben Shapiro.

Can anyone identify a single debate that Ben Shapiro lost without question?

The reason Ben Shapiro wants to debate Cortez is obvious. Cortez is the only Democrat with any positive attention right now. Name another one, that's okay, I'll wait.....

And just like that, debates are bad...

Didn't we have war room debates not so long ago?
lol, not all debates are equal. What a weird thing to say.

We'll boot up the debates again anytime people want. I'd like to see it back, but there's a lack of interest. Semi-formal debate is dead all across the internet today.

I'm with the consensus that Cortez could not debate her way out of a paper bag, while it is Sharpio's occupation to be snarky.

I haven't seen anything from her which shows that she'd be good in a debate, whereas Shapiro has "Debating Club" stenciled on his pocket protectors.
At least with Shapiro you'd always know what his arguments were going to be, libertarian dogma down the line, except in those cases where it might conflict with his religious conservatism.

You strike me as the type of guy who thinks he could beat Shapiro in a debate and would get absolutely destroyed.

of course she won't debate Ben Shapiro

he might get out there w/ certain beliefs on say abortion or obviously his huge support of Israel, but the dude was educated at Harvard Law ffs

she would get decimated by Stephen Crowder, none the less Ben Shapiro

According to Sherdog Shapiro is a dud and politician should have no problem with a debate. But how is cat calling a valid excuse ? #futrueoftheDemocrats #righthere

Hah! I never joined the Chess Club or Debating Team, but I don't find Libertarian ideologues remotely convincing and Shapiro is more dogmatic than most.

I wouldn't say American Libertarian ideas conflict with American Evangelical beliefs, although it is perhaps a better debate topic.

I don't want to derail the thread, so will just read any response, and if further discussion is merited might make another thread on the topic of moral/religious principles and fair governance.

That said, here is the gist:

The whole point of a fairly free and unfettered system was that in Calvinist Tradition each could have a chance to attain their own success without the entrapment's of too much interference from class power brokers, institutions that exchange favors for power, or personal relationships interfering with fair distribution of goods.

Now Shapiro might be an Ayn Rand molded hypocrite on that front, (I'm not a fan of his Youtubbery , but have liked an article or two he penned) , but the concept "works" for America, although with a series of flaws, and of course not independent from the need for central government planning and provincial government strength.

If I were in her shoes or any Congressperson's shoes the only debates I would accept are those against political opponents running against me. I'm sure he wants to hammer her on her policy views, which is fair game if you're also out there with your policy views for that district and the winner get's decided by the voters.

She's not supposed to represent anyone other than her district, right? So why is she going to debate a guy on the opposite end of the spectrum with nothing to gain by it?

Presidential debates are a different matter since the president is the elected official for all Americans.

Edit: These folks should obviously be prepared to defend their positions on the floor as well.

Honestly, I'm not sure she's actually off base with this. Do you think Ben has good intentions? Did she in any way solicit a debate with him? Nope. He's some middlingly popular right wing media pundit who wants to debate an aspiring elected official, which she is in no way obligated to do, and apparently has no interest in. He's not even remotely entitled to debate her.

Personally, I'd prefer a response of "no thanks, not interested," but she's not responding in a way that doesn't capture the situation with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Let Ben go find another knothole to hump.

What is the excuse fr her not debating candace owens then?

To Shapiro fans:

Please name the progressives, leftists or socialists Shapiro has thus far debated. I want to get a sense of the caliber of his opponents. I mean, I have seen him own some anonymous college freshmen but, seriously, who are the most established, accomplished names currently on his bagged and tagged list?

Here's Shapiro embarrassing and intellectually dominating Cenk of "The Young Turks":

I'm on my lunch break, otherwise I'd dig deeper.

She refused to debate candace owens, nice try though, that excuse invalid now.

Ben Shapiro would mop the floor with her and she knows that. She'd be foolish to accept. It's also not very surprising that she reflexively cast herself as the victim in the situation.

If it were a Parliamentary Shaprio strikes me as a great Leader of the Opposition.

The basic antagonistic case, well summarized, and framed towards the basic argument and understanding of the issues.

Even more troublesome for Ocasio as she might try to make a more philosophical or social minded point, and he would tear into her like a badger who found her honey pot over the specifics of what is hard to specify.

Yeah, I'm not saying Libertarianism and being an Orthodox Jew is hypocritical or anything like that.
Just that Shapiro is a dogmatic Libertarian, and the only time I find anything he says interesting (ie it's not just reproducing something I've already read in historical Libertarian philosophy) is when he does have to negotiate an apparent conflict between the two.
