Oblique Kicks Can Cause Career Ending Injuries - Is That An Excuse To Ban Them?

It seems to me that possibly the main argument for banning oblique kicks is that while fighters are in the cage with the objective of hurting their opponents to the degree necessary to win the fight, oblique kicks can do much more than end a fight; they can end careers.

I don't consider this a legitimate reason to ban oblique kicks. Just suppose they went ahead and banned them because they carry the possibility, however slight, to end an opponent's career. If that were to happen the precedent would be set. The criteria for banning a maneuver then becomes: Can it cause a career ending injury?

If that becomes the precedent by which we determine if a maneuver should be banned, then suplexes can be banned because had Fedor landed just an inch or two off from the way he landed, he might well have been paralyzed for life. When we saw Gonzaga kick Cro Cop to the head for the knockout and the win, I know that the first reaction many people viewing the fight had was that Cro Cop looked very seriously injured, probably bad enough that he would never fight again. Certainly that type of a kick could end the career of a fighter had the fighter been not quite as tough as Cro Cop, or maybe just not quite as lucky as Cro Cop was to not have sustained a career ending injury from that kick. Even a punch to the head can end a career or even a life. So if people seriously want oblique kicks banned, they need to come up with a better argument.

I think they should be banned. Can't tell a better reason than what you just said. They're way too dangerous. I know that a head kick is dangerous also or whatever, but it seems different. It's like a sub that the guy doesn't have a chance of tapping. It's going to break your leg.

And they'll ban it right after the first fight that is ended due to a oblique kick that snapped the guys leg.

Almost every strike/submission comes with the possibility of a "career ending" injury. So no, no they shouldn't be banned, this is a fight sport after all. Taking away a fighters tools waters the sport down imo, it's bad enough that fighters are as limited as they are already

kicking shin to shin is as well ask anderson or tyrone spong

I hate them, but it's a fight at the end of the day.

Defend that shit...

All of it in fact; bring back stomps, 12-6 elbows, downed knees, and the rape choke. It's a fight.

MMA can cause career ending injuries is tha an excuse to ban it ?

THEY'RE DOING IT BECAUSE THEY WANT.

Last thing we need is MORE rules, Jesus for supposed "fight" fans, some of you are sensitive vaginas.

I wouldn't mind "heel kicks to a knee joint" being banned. I would rather they legalize stomps and headkicks to a downed opponent. I think its no different than striking a person on the feet, and a swift KO is better than repetitive strikes which lead to concussions. On the other hand, i can see kicks to a knee-joint being on par with small-joint manipulation.

Meh, it's a complicated argument to make.

Why ban soccer kicks on the ground, downward elbows to the head, hair pulling, eye gouges etc. etc. There's a limit where a sport stops being a sport and becomes something else.

I thing the reason they haven't been banned yet is because no fighter has trained to deliver these really hard (JJ does them a lot, but they are rather fast and annoying instead of with full force), but the first time a leg or a knee snaps after one of these they will be banned.

Most techniques could cause career ending injuries. How many fighters have been retired via oblique kicks?
I have trained in French Boxe for the few months when I was in France. I have eaten some of those kicks and delivered my fair share. They are fairly common in the art and even though they are painful I never saw anyone getting seriously injured.

So, are they potentially career-ending? Probably. How often does it happen, though?

Head kicks, knees, elbows and punches can end your life.

BAN THEM.

I agree with the "defend that shit" sentiment, but is there a specific defense for this technique other than "get out of the way"?

Then they're first going mohave to ban checking leg kicks with the knee because that actually did snap a leg, like any oblique kick in UFC history. It didn't snap just anyone's leg either; it snapped the leg of Anderson Silva - one of the greatest and most beloved fighters in MMA history.
