Glad to see nothing has changed at the NYT. Still the smug, sanctimonious, patronizing joke of a newspaper as ever.

Nice article, cool reading a take about the sport when it was in it's earliest stages.

A certain idea of what it means to be a civilization and "civilized" certainly did decline within the last 50 years or so. And positioning the UFC as a mainstream sport is certainly one of the (less significant) symptoms. So the authors concerns are well understood. The suggestion, implied in the impetus of his outrage, that the UFC is somehow causing this change in sensibilities is a more dubious claim.

Still... I see little wrong in the article, given what was known, claimed and observable in 1992.

The New Zealand Christchurch shooting was live streamed on facebook.
And they thought the UFC was the end of civilized society... little did they know.

Where I live we had a guy put out a live stream of his own suicide on the country's biggest internet forum. People in the thread were egging him on the whole way. We are terrific as a species.

Every single journalist ever should get locked in the cage with Johnny Walker for 1 round.

The issue of physical isolation + social media influence on depression and suicidal tendencies is not a new one. In Poland these were main themes for the controversial "Suicide Room" film in 2011.
