The funny thing about this is I had no idea they couldn't before. It appears that the beards remain an issue to be resolved.

The reason this story caught me by surprise is that here we have had officers and military members doing this since the late 1980's. With NYC being pretty typically progressive I was surprised to hear they were over 25 years behind the times on this.

    It's NYC.
The Yankees have a uniform policy to remind everyone they're the greatest team in the history of sports.
    NYPD, another great team.
But I'm cool with this modernizing.

I don't like it, especially because it is a religious symbol.
He's working as a policeman, not as a priest, mufti etc
What's next, female officers in Burqa? No thanks.

Doesn't bother me and seems very reasonable, but this might lead to everyone else asking for uniform concessions.

If a religious accessory does not impede the officer's ability to police the streets, then it doesnt matter what any of us personally feel, they should be able to wear it. As much as I hate religion, my personal beliefs or the beliefs of others doesnt dictate what an officer can and cant wear.

Already on the agenda in the U.K.

Should be a good laugh when that comes in.

Every officer should wear one uniform, no religious garments or paraphernalia on show whatsoever IMO.

The wearing of the religious garments or paraphernalia does not impede their ability to do their job. In fact it likely helps while serving in ethnic communities. It would seem like this meets the "reasonable accommodation" sniff test to me.

This rule is for Sikh Police Officers, who's religion says it's absolutely mandatory to wear them.

I don't think there are many religions which have as strict rules. Most of the clothing rules you see in Islam are regional/cultural and wouldn't apply to a New Yorker unless they're doing it voluntarily. The one exception I can think of is Rastafarianism, and google images confirms there are already NYPD officers with dreads.

I wonder if they wear helmets in combat? I remember reading either a Frenchh or British ww2 general calling the Sikhs crazy because they'd go into battle without a helmet.

I've been to 10-11 states and I've not seen any cops wearing funny hats. I also live in a very diverse part of U.S.

A police officer is supposed to represent everyone and they should have a standard, accepted look that commands respect. If I saw that guy wave me over, I'd think he was just some Indian dude wanting a ride. lol
