The Gracies were notably winning vale tudo events and had early experience in UFC/Pride in beating people with their style and had multiple family members to make their mark on the sport. Since it’s been almost 30 years since the UFC began, we have yet to see a complete Gracie fighter at a high level in this sport.

On the other side of the world, Abdulamanap had essentially bred his nephews and relatives into ranked fighters at multiple divisions in the UFC. While there probably is a difference in athleticism between Numagomedovs vs Gracies, it is obvious that sambo is much more practical and useful as an art. Plus, Sambists we have seen in the UFC have a good submission game off their back as well.

    TLDR: Father plan > BJJ

Neiman Gracie is probably the most well rounded Gracie ever and he is a top level WW IMO. He currently doesn't deserve a top 10 ranking but I think he could beat at least one guy in the top 10.

Gracies had success when nobody had a clue what BJJ was. There are still some good Gracies like Neiman and Kron but none of them are as promising as Nurmagomedovs

BJJ is definitely overrated at this moment, very few people are winning by pulling guard or whatever dumb shit is taught in BJJ schools

The sport has just evolved. To say a guy like Khabib for example (who is known for having one of the best triangle chokes at aka) hasn’t been significantly influenced by bjj is laughable and shows how little many of you know about Jits.

You obviously have never been on the mats a day in your life.

You will not last in MMA if you have never practiced BJJ, ask justin Gaethje.

The Brasilians are obsessed with Bjj.
Every time a Brasilian wins with bjj they all come on social media how great Bjj is.

Two GOATs retired undefeated. Only one way to know for sure who is best.

    Khabib 29-0 vs. Rickson 400-0

    Book it.

The early UFCs were a BJJ propaganda machine.

Guaranteed there were martial artists capable of whooping Gracie ass even in the 1990s. Their opponents were carefully selected to not have the means to combat them though.

You say propaganda, I say marketing. It worked to the tune of millions and millions pumped into their system of jiu jitsu. Bjj is also an important building block for MMA as we know it. It is just 1 piece to the puzzle but it is an incredibly important piece.

Who is the best grappler Khabib ever fought? I would like to have seen him fight a top level BJJ gut such as Maia (in his prime) at welterweight.

What Khabib does is well inside bjj.

And Sambo itself is vague. You mean sport or combat Sambo? Sport Sambo doesnt allow chokes and doesn't allow much guard playing, while Combat Sambo allows both.

This will piss some people off, but...

    Brazilian Jujitsu Isn’t Brazilian

It’s still absolutely hilarious how they can claim creation of the Martial Art as their own when it’s historically known that it was imported, and taught.

It's an unfair comparison. The time period and the training under aka and the people training with and as complete mmartists- it's not even a debate.

These debates are fine as long as certain circumstances are imagined.... whatever they might be .

this sums it up.! BBJ is overrated in the cage as long as fighters don't give up their backs or any limbs. But for some stupid reason BJJ gyms are in every corner in every major US cities. And those Brazilian implants are shamefully charging from $250- to $300 per month to train this crap.
