After an elderly man ran through the Santa Monica farmer's market years ago they installed these steel cylinder barricades all over that can slide into the pavement when not in use but can be unlocked and raised up by the police to block vehicles from entering the area when the street is closed for the market.

They'd also physically block closed streets with parked police cars in addition to the barricades.

Particularly when it comes to mass casualty events whether they use a car, a gun, or a bomb.

Media was quick to talk about mental illness with the Unabomber and the Oklahoma City federal building, but they don't mention mental illness, poverty, and PTSD when a guy blows himself up in a market with an explosive vest in Iraq.

Sometimes people are acting on their own, but other times terrorist organizations and criminal organizations feed on people with mental illness, groom them, and use them as tools.

I don't live there anymore so maybe they don't do it in Calgary any more, but it seemed like a good idea imo and should be standard practice across the country.

It would be nice if we didn't have to worry about this kind of shit in Canada like in the old days, but that ship has sailed unfortunately.

They do that in Vancouver as well most of the time
