Now that I have a solid job offer, how do I do my finances smartly?

Hey there,

Get this short book by George Clason - "The Richest Man in Babylon"

I am quite late into the game - spent my entire 20s in Academia not earning much, when I finally got a real job with cash, I went a bit nuts.

Finally settled down now in my late 30s and trying to sort out long-term financial goals now, the only thing I am truly screwed with is living in Singapore, I cannot buy any property as the cheapest available is $1m+ and you need 40% down payment...

Everything else for investment, debt payment and monthly spending is well covered in this book, just play with the percentages and you should be fine.

As others have said, keep a cash war chest ready, and keep the hell away from get-rich-quick schemes.

Look for that Stock Portfolio thread and look for some good Vanguard ETF's.
