noticed this while watching Thompson v Melendez II

in the second round, after Gil accidentally hit Thompson with a groin strike, the crowd boos and Thompson is given 5 minutes to recover.

While Thompson is recovering, I noticed Gilbert took a knee and rested on his side of the canvas.

I've never seen this before, are fighters allowed to take some sort of rest like taking a knee or sitting while waiting for their opponent to recover from the groin strike?

Seemed a little odd, of course this is strikeforce but still

had nothing to do with the promotion. fighters are told to go to a neutral corner, and their corners are not allowed to give advice. no rule prohibiting them from kneeling/resting.

They say it legit almost every event, I’ve heard the ref mention it dozens of times and even yell at cornerman for it

yes- he could have plopped down on the canvas and waited until the fight resumed. as for a stool- it can only be brought in between rounds.

to be clear- we've all heard referees say "stand in a neutral corner", yet the unified rules do not state that they have to stand.

E. If a foul is committed:
i. The referee shall call timeout.
ii. The referee shall order the offending contestant to a neutral location.
