No wonder he almost got Shavkat

Heading into the fight Ian and Shavkat were a combined 33-0 and 14-0 in the UFC. You have to be dense if you couldn't see how good both of them are. No surprise it was a close fight.

To speak on Ian's training, yeah he's been working on his grappling down in Brazil for quite a while now.

How is he "just as good" if he just lost to him?
Who is better, Francis Ngannou or Derrick Lewis? Alexandre Pantoja or Dustin Ortiz?

Are GSP and Matt Sera equally as good sincse they are 1-1?

MMA is a highly unpredictable sport and the same fighters face each other 5 times you can get 5 different outcomes.

As it is Shavkat was able to control more minutes of the fight than Garry, Garry won less seconds but he undoubtedly had the biggest moments of the fight and was the only one who tried or came close to getting a finish.

Garry made Shavkat look human. Now Garry will hopefully be a little less picky on taking fights and Shavkat won't be so avoided.
How has Garry ever been picky? He worked his way up to being on the fringes of the top 5 and still accepted fights with MVP and Buckley. Both of whom were ranked lower than him, both of whom did nothing for him if he beat them. Garry himself said he wanted big fights and he was excited about neither. Yet he accepted both. He has never been picky about fighting anybody.

I think Shavkhat and Ian are the 2 best welterweights in the world but I think Shavkhat is a noticeable (but not overwhelming) gap over Ian.

He beat him and his overall background is better- which is why he walked into the fight as a favorite and proved exactly why he was the favorite.

Shavkhat finishes guys Ian goes to decisions with (Magny, Geoff [split decision for Ian]), has wins over slightly better names (Wonderboy & Alex Oliveira).

With all that said, Ian is 2 years younger, has the right mindset, matches Shavkhat striking [if not slightly better in purity of striking], and should catch up to Shavkhat if not surpass him, in the future.

That's why this match-up was so great [even if the fight was kind of boring] - we're likely to see these guys fight for the title again in the future once or twice.

It has all the dynamics of JDS/Velasquez, Liddell/Ortiz, Jones/DC, Dominic/Faber, etc.

Expect some fake drama because these 2 guys know that this was only chapter 1 of their storyline [they trained together, they interacted, they fought as contenders, they're both 2 young lanky dudes].

Garry is good at putting fights to sleep, pointifighting until the end, here's why it seems close.
