I was upset enough when the best replacement the UFC could find for Shane Carwin, was Matt Mittione.

Nelson, even in defeats against Dos Santos and Werdum, has displayed an almost unfinishable toughness, except of course against submissions. A sub-par opponent in Dave Herman was fun batting practice the first time, but the fans dont want to see any more softballs against this aging great one. Like Anderson Silva, the man is getting older and the window to exploit his greatness is shortening. The inspiration for this post came after seening an espn.co.uk article about possible fight with Pat freakin Barry, the guy who lost to fading Crocop.

Let the iron-chinned Fabio Maldonado move up in weight to fight Nelson or something. Opponents more suitable for Nelson are:

Struve for knockout number 2, Kongo, Hunt, Nog, Cormier, Carwin, Russow, Bigfoot, Barnett.

Big country was only fighting elites for a while.. no shame in taking a break by fighting Herman or Mitrione.

Since you know the guy isn't going to be a champion theres no point in killing him though. I don't see a problem in fighting Barry either.

Carwin is definitely a great matchup and has to be done.

the problem is that every time he faces an "elite" opponent, things don't go so well for him, e.g. jds, mir, werdum.

Big Country wins once against subpar, underprepared opponent

He's good now!!1! Get him top competition!! JDS where are uuuuuu?!?!

Wait a second, hasn't Nelson only been finished by T/KO by Arlovski, and has never been submitted? Or am I reading this wrong.

i love big countrym but you saw what happened to him vs top 10 fighters, werdum gave him a beating, mir tooled him etc. he would be a great matchup for bigfoot after reem will make qucik work of him. silva and nelson are on the same level, not good enough for top 10 but entertaining.

He tends to lose against the upper-echelon, Bigfoot fight sounds fun.

anytime Nelson gets a top 10 opponent he gets obliterated, though

This. Nelson is a gatekeeper, he's good at it, but that's what he is.

Nelson isn't going to break the top 3-5 yet, but his ability to go the distance with both JDS and Werdum was impressive.

How many other guys recently went the distance with JDS?

Ya unfortunately he's in a tough spot. Too good for the lower echelon and not good enough for the higher echelon. Give him a ton of credit for hanging in there with JDS though.

Wouldn't mind seeing him welcome Josh Barnett to the UFC. Bigger fight for him.

Agree he shouldn't be fighting Barry, since there's no way Barry will be able to keep Country off him. Cannot see why Maldonado would possibly seem like a good option though, the guy is undersized at LHW. Sure, he can take an epic punch, but if he couldn't stop Glover from holding him down and pounding him, what do you think Roy would do? I agree on your other options though, I'd like to see him fight someone just below contender status, I probably wouldn't want DC or Barnett, but I'd be interested to see him fight anyone else on your list.

Edit: Also, please, please, don't compare Roy to Anderson, there are plenty of aging fighter who need to be given good fights while there's still time that are not Anderson Silva (Hendo, Franklin, Rampage etc.), comparing him to Silva only makes you look like a hard core Roy fanatic (not saying you are, but that's what it makes it seem), and makes people want to stop reading.

Nelson has fought 6 of the top 15 guys in the world, there are tons of ranked fighters who havent fought more than 1. I personally would love to see Nelson KO Fedor, but I guess his next fight should be Cormier, Kongo, Hunt, or Browne.

Carwin, which is why that was an interesting fight.
