So my buddy has been twisting my arm about dropping gluten and dairy from my diet. I dropped dairy first about 2 months ago, and honestly havent missed it. I then dropped gluten about 2-3 weeks ago and although it was harder dropping the gluten really made the biggest difference.

Its part of a bigger overhaul that I am going through now that he has his doctorate and is focusing on alternative medicine. I am one of his first patients.

Anyway to cut it short in terms of gym performance I seem to be having a huge jump. Before this I would get lactic acid buildup in my muscles before really getting winded. Its the sort of lactic buildup and burn out you hear about when guys are going too hard trying to finish a guy with a guiliotine or something and they burn their arms out. I used to get this across my whole body while grappling and even sparring.

I just dont get the burnout to this level any more. My muscles do get tired and I do get winded like everyone else, but it takes longer and my recovery time is MUCH quicker theres no more gasping for air waiting for the lactic burn to leave your muscles.

The other major benefit performance wise is reduced inflamation. I feel this in my joints big time. I had chronic shoulder inflamation. Reaching behind my back with my right arm used to really hurt my shoulder and my knees would be sore after a hard night, especially when standing up from sitting for a while.

I just generally felt older than my 27yrs would indicate. I felt more like 47. Now I can tell you my body can finally keep up with my gym schedule.

Other nice benefits I noticed:
Loss of weight - especially in wierd areas that seemed stubborn before, like face, neck and love handles
I can breath through my nose finally!! (this was actually one of the real reasons I started the diet)
I would also say more consistent energy through the day (but I am still stuggeling with this)

Overall I suggest everyone at least try it, it usually only takes a week or 2 to see if your sensitive to gluten.. I wish I knew this years ago

I've been on a keto diet for 10 days now, and I haven't drank milk (though, I eat cheese), and haven't eaten bread or pasta, and I'd say that while I didn't have any nagging pains beforehand, I have more energy now.

I'd say that I agree with you. Good luck with your lifestyle change, and maybe thank your pal!

What form of dairy were eating beforehand? Isn't the main culprit for dairy side effects lactose?

Congrats on your success guys. The whole gluten/dairy trend is interesting. Can you successfully lose weight, feel better and look better with gluten and dairy in your diet? Absolutely...

Is it smart to remove them, see how you respond then adjust from there? Absolutely...

My beef with the whole gluten and dairy thing is that I feel that, for some people, they don't really need to remove them. if you're not losing weight it might be because you're just eating too many carbs. You don't need to launch a Nuke if you haven't even sent ground troops in.

That being said, a paleo/gluten free.keto diet isn't really sustainable for anyone performing MMA weekly. I know some guys use it for their camp but the first rule of a diet is being sustainable.

Good post!

I wasn't having a ton of dairy to begin with so that's probably why I didn't see much change.

My buddy is suggesting full on paleo with the addition of sweet potatoes. I've struggled with that and there are days where I literally jus wanted any carb I didn't care. So I have been cheating with quinoa and I love the stuff.

I've also kicked the beans and added lots of salad n place and my body has thanked me for it

I still do worry about the sustainability of this though because boy do I miss pizza and cookies. Also if I didn't live down the road from wholefoods I don't think I'd be able to find enough good gluten alternatives

The reason why dairy is a problem for low-carb is NOT the gluten or "dairyness", it's the insane amount of sugar that is in milk (13 grams/cup). If you drink 2 cups you're out of ketosis or otherwise experiencing serious glycemic spikes.

I eat cheese, and even that has 2 grams sugar/slice.

gluten and dairy free have absolutely nothing to do with ketosis, and a ketosis diet is fucking retarded

I'm in the same boat with you Jimmy. Myself, I have cut out a lot of my carbs and have seen a pretty substantial weight loss (from 256lbs to 188lbs as of yesterday). Small substainable changes, aka a lifestyle change, over a period of time will have the longest lasting impact for people. When you go extreeeeeeme (see HCG diet) you get extreeeeme results, but they don't last. Being healthy is a lifestyle, not a temporary change of food intake. But the truth doesn't sell books/videos/fitness sessions/etc (no offense or implications intended Jimmy). Se la vi.

The results most people see on Keto, and the entire professional bodybuilding world, disagree with you.

and most if not all of them are on a low carb diet, not ketosis...despite what they may think

^ What kind of cheese is that ? Pretty surprised to hear that.

Kraft singles American cheese

I cut gluten/dairy for the benefits. I'm not really on any diet per say in terms of wanting to lose weight.

Even the paleo diet is not intended to be low carb, it just ends up being that way most of the time because it restricts all refined carbs which is how most people get the majority of their carbs.

I am still having a pretty good amount of carbs but I'm also working out a lot. More so now that my joints arent all messed up

Now that's a pretty weird sentence!

Where did your friend study and what field did he get his PhD in?

I cut out gluten, dairy, legumes and most processed food after I read Robb Wolf's book. I stayed very strict for about 3 months. I've definitely noticed big differences. I had no energy for about the first two weeks but since then I have more energy, gaining muscle/losing fat, my skin and hair look much healthier and general stomach/gut irritation that I've had most of my life has vanished. Over the last 2 months I have had a little dairy on occasion mostly eating Indian food and had some cheese in omelets or protein style cheeseburger at In N Out and I definitely pay the day after eating dairy with multiple bathroom trips

does this mean no protein powders? i only ask cause i do want to give this a try but didnt know what the post workout solution would be then. i have heard that most powders are that refined you could barely call them a form of dairy anyway

Protein powders are A OK with me. Any whey isolate is so pure its not really dairy any more.

I just choose pure protein powders. I go to True Nutrition - The Highest Quality Supplements and Protein at the Lowest Prices and get protein without artificial sweetners/fillers and other garbage which is whats in most commercial protein powders.

Post workout though I drink BCAAs in old school gatorade or Endurox. THen take a shower, come out and eat real food.
