whew, its been a while since I've posted but I felt I had to bring a different perspective to the Nick Diaz situation-

Current Opinions:
1. Weed should be legal (I know there's more too it but for real)
2. NSAC over stepped their boundaries
3. Nick is a punk, too bad he got what was coming to him

In my opinion....Why should we...or even HE care?

Aside from the $167000 fine, I don't see why Nick should really care about an NSAC suspension.

Nick has fought 9 times in the last 5 years, and only 3 times in the last 3 years. He's not exactly "trying to make a run at it or anything".

One thing to consider is that the UFC holds 20% of their events in Vegas (went back to 9/2012 to calculate). Granted thats more than any other city, but whats stopping him from fighting in other states? He's still going to be able to find a city to fight in once every 18 months.

Essentially, my argument is that Nick is still going to be able to make a living. Just not in Las Vegas. For the record, I don't see why they test for mary jane, NSAC overstepped their authority, and Nick Diaz is a "punk", but isn't that why we like him?

5 years and $167000 is way too harsh no matter how much you try to sugar coat it.

I agree. I just don't see why he would care. (aside from the money of course). I guess I was waiting for him to say "F NSAC, and F LV, I'd rather fight in _______"

That's not how it works though. Up to now, other commissions respect NSAC and honor their suspensions. UFC goes overseas without a commission and honors their suspensions. As long as Diaz is under contract, he can't fight anywhere.

There has never been a decision this controversial though. This may be the first time another state says they'll sanction a fighter who has been suspended elsewhere. We'll see.

Thanks for the insight BP. I didn't think that if one commission suspended someone they couldn't fight anywhere else. Is this in writing somewhere? (not that I doubt your knowledge, I just couldn't find that info anywhere before I posted) Who wants to call CSAC? (916) 263-2195.

OP is all over the place.

I'm going to smoke a joint. That is all.

The UFC won't even try to get Nick a fight anywhere else regardless of the AC's unwritten respect for one another.

The UFC won't piss on the NSAC's decisions like that, they hold a huge number of the biggest fights in Nevada, it would be downright stupid to go against them and open the doors for more problems. Political suicide.

Nick will ride the pine unless his appeal is successful.

I don't think it's an official rule, but it's a well ingrained unwritten rule. Like I said though, there's never been a case like this. I wouldn't put it past another commission to agree to sanction him. But the UFC may be too beholden to the NSAC to book a fight elsewhere. Nevada is their back yard and they have deep and incestuous ties with the NSAC. (Fertitta was a member of the commission for a while.) Hard to guess which way it goes.

Well TS, its more than just not being able to fight for 5 years. He can't train with his team. He can't corner his brother (or any fighter).

Other states will uphold the NSAC's suspension. UFC will not violate NSAC's ban. The only way Nick can fight again, without winning an appeal to life the ban, is to be cut by the UFC and fight someplace the NSAC's ban would not be honoured.

Commissions honor suspensions handed down by other commissions. He would have to fight overseas.

lol this is how things have been run for decades.

Not matter how long its been going on, there hasn't been this much of a discrepancy in rules between AC's. Again, I'm pretty sure CSAC allows the use of marijuana so it wouldn't have been an issue there.

There's too much sympathy for Diaz. He hasn't been a good fighter for a while and rules are rules. Everyone who gets caught from now should get serious penalties. Life ban for roiders. Let's make this sport cleaner. And banning weed junkies will make no difference.

The 'rules are rules' argument is one of the worst ever repeated. As bad as simply stating 'rules are made to be broken'.

While rules should be followed they also need to be constantly re-evaluated and challenged. Rules can be unfair and wrong and simply because they were in place does not mean people should suffer extreme punishment shrugged off with 'oh well rules are rules so sorry for you luck'. That thinking is what leads to life imprisonment sentences under the US 3 Strikes laws for minor things such as smoking weed.

For things like steroids I have no issue with the increasing and strict enforcement. But things like weed suffer due to big pharma and big religion demonizing it for their own ends.

Why does everyone act like the NSAC really matters long term? If enough harm is done by this, and New York suddenly gets done, there will simply be a new fight capital of the world, rules will be amended and this will be a lesson to AC's everywhere.
