No rule, but the guy pulling turtle was prolly kinda hoping that Kenzo wouldn't attack and prefer to just stand for the restart, ...or he may have been hoping that he could hold off Kenzos progress on ground for a restart from the ref.

You can pull gaurd all you like in judo but if nothing happens quick with regards to progess, then it will be restarted.

Sometimes they put hooks in sometimes they don't.

Because in judo you have so few seconds on the ground that if you loose time putting the hooks the match is restarted standing. So they just try to turn you over and pin, because a 30 seconds pin win the match.

The vid was just to show a cool newaza match in judo, but comparisons vs bjj are fine.:D

You shouldn't be surprised, given the rules of judo it's just the most efficient tactics. Sports are *definied* by rules, and so rules shape the skill set that practitioners are going to learn and improve. Another example is that in judo you don't see many subs from dominant position (like mount or side control) because it's much more efficient to just hold down the guy for 30 seconds and you win. The few armbars and triangles are usually done to attack the turtle.

With a really defensive guy bent on not getting subbed from the turtle, it could take you half an hour to get a sub out of him. You only get 30 sec.

So judo guys like to flip people over from the turtle. It gives you more attacking options.

Its pretty ugly near the top with newaza in judo.:icon_lol:

I can see why bjjers might not think much of it, but judo guys will think it was a pretty intense match. Its a different game that way.

That scissors is a reverse triangle. They work pretty good.

Ask about how good is Kenzo Nakamura to the Judo and BJJ guy that Train at Budokwai in london. He taught the top class there last years.

The guy that train there are Olympic judoka like Winston gordon, but also Roger Gracie .

I've read that they sparred on newaza a couple of time.

So, what's your point, Thalion?

it was a reply to the guy that said the dumb thing

" a blue belt would school them"

At budokwai there are a lot of great judoka and Bjjer, and from the report of the student of budokwai, the only one that had the edge with kenzo on the ground while sparring was Roger Gracie (That is also like 25 kg at least heavier and 10 years younger and one of the best Ground fighter in the world )

That is a report of a BJJ Purple or Brown belt of the Budokwai about his first newaza randori with Kenzo (He didn't know who he was)

Finally, I did ne-waza with Kenzo once. I saw a japanese guy on the mat with no sparring partner and asked if he was free, he indicated he was. He started with a very wide open guard position, so i thought to myself "i'll take it slowly, i've never seen a judo player here work an open guard before", i didn't want people to think I was just sparring using weight or strength (i was about 35lbs heavier than Kenzo). I was clowned, badly clowned. It became apparent after 5 seconds that a). he was stronger than me with a very intense grip, b). he was way more comfortable on the ground than i was, c). He knew how to use Open Guard ;o) I was pretty dispondent after my pwnage, and said to someone watching (paraphrasing) "yowsers, that guy is slick". He laughed at me and said "you don't know who he is do you....." before explaining.

Thalion, I think you missed that Evil Eye Gouger was being sarcastic...

also, please, may you give reference (link) about your post?

I talked to Roger personally in Lisbon, he said to me that he trains judo at budokwai, no mention of interstile grappling matches. Also you know better than me that sparring means nothing, competition is what counts. BTW, I'm interested in your sources.
