As a huge Maia fan I'm just curious where people see the direction of his career going?

He looked stellar vs Magny and Laflare and really set himseld apart from your average ww.
He gassed vs Rory (great body kick really helped Rory) but otherwise round 1 was a vintage grappling clinic.

With the top 5 booked or injured Robbie Condit Woodley Hendricks Brown Rory Gastelum. Where is Maia going to land in this mix.

Id love personally see him take on a solid wrestler Hendricks or Woodley and perhaps be a win or 2 away from a title shot.

Worse case senario is the ufc keeps feeding him up and comming prospects to grapple fuck. Hes a unique talent and an aging one. Thoughts?

    Maia via sub...all day.

I'm intrigued at how would it go between him and Gunnar Nelson.

That's tough to say.. He's just so good at grappling, guys who are not incredible wrestlers can't stop it.. He seems to only lose against the top 3. Niel was on a great run, but the fighters were also not top 5 or even top 10 caliber. I think Maia should be put back in with a top 5 or 3 to see where he lands. He's easily 1-2 fights away from a title shot with the right opponents.

That's actually an awesome match-up, I'd love to see that. Gunnar looks like he gives up some size at WW, it'd be interesting to see how he dealt with Maia

So is Maia the new WW gatekeeper now? Using him to test promising prospects?

He's already fought Rory recently, Hendricks and Woodley are likely fighting, I say give him Wonderboy in a classic striker vs grappler matchup. Also, Maia vs The Dong 2 = a rare time where I actually support a rematch. The first fight lasted like 40 seconds and ended because of a fluke injury, I'd like to see it again and it makes sense rankings wise (although Maia has way more momentum). A matchup with Gunnar would be good too although I think Maia would be too much for him right now.

Will be interesting to see how the promotion handles Maia going forward. Unless he takes a short notice fight, he will be 38 by the time his next fight rolls around. I don't think that the upper brass are interested in having him in title discussion. Will be interesting to watch what happens with him.

To test their ground game yeah. It's a bit too stiff a test though.

I don't consider Maia getting a body lock takedown and slamming DHK to the mat causing an injury as a fluke. I also don't consider Woodley snapping Condit's knee to be a fluke. If your opponent throws you and something breaks, that's a legit way to beat them and deserves credit.

I don't see that happening, I see it as a very even fight between 2 technical opponents of comparable skills.
would be a good headliner/co-mains for one of the Euro cards.

Maia can handle Gunnar on the ground. He's a way better than Gunnar on the ground and takedowns.

    30-27 Maia.

If he can defend maia's takedown then yes. but if maia takes him down, maia destroys him.

Apparently DHK had a "muscle spasm" which would be the flukey part. Regardless, the fight lasted less than a minute and I'd like to see it again. Maia dominates the Dong for a UD imo.

And I never said anything about the Condit fight. That was a legitimate win for Woodley.

Do people really think Gunnar beats Maia on the ground? He seems to have a great top game and excellent mount, but I don't see him taking Maia down and even if he does I doubt he can pass to mount. I could be wrong but I think Maia easily wins a decision if the fight is contested on the ground, he might not submit him but he beats him in every battle for position.
