I started taking Jiu Jitsu classes a couple of weeks ago and was wondering if you guys had any tips? How can I make my guard unpassable? What are common mistakes I should avoid?

Not trolling. Go to class everyday. The common mistake you will want to avoid is not going to class everyday.

Unless you're in top shape and already doing intense physical work outs every day, I actually wouldn't recommend training BJJ *every* day as it's a recipe for over-training and injury (speaking on behalf of many experiences including my own).

2-3 days a week is fine.

YMMV I guess. There are times to drill and spar, and times to melt faces. I go everyday.

Nobody is going to overtrain from training Mon-Sat. Overtraining is way harder to actually achieve than the internet would lead you to believe.

Go to class. Listen to whatever your coach is trying to teach you and when you roll try to practice actual techniques that you are being taught. Accept that you will tap out constantly and that you are there to learn. Respect whatever partner you roll with and try to create a good environment for you both. And, keep training.

True this, I actually schedule it in my Day Runner. Monday, Wednesday and Friday are for drilling and sparring. Tuesday and Thursday are face-melting days.

lol

I also wouldn't recommend going everyday. You'll burn out, because you're going to be learning so much that its going to simply overwhelm you.

2-3 times a week is fine. Once you become an addict, upgrade to 4-5 times a week.

As for advice, be prepared to tap. Don't try to be a bad ass, because you'll just end up hurting yourself.

If you are free time, attend as many training as possible.
Worst case scenario, just don't roll at every classes.
Do not just rely on being spoon fed like you are in school.
Take responsibilities of learning and thinking on your own.
Borrow books, buy stuff, study stuff, watch YouTube etc...
Ask teammates for advices.

yup

Don't be put off if youre getting owned every time you roll. Out of nowhere you will realise youre actually getting better and better over time. Be patient.

Thanks for the tips guys. I recently got a nasty skin condition which may have me sidelined for a couple weeks but I will keep those tips in mind in the future!

I'd say the three biggest things..

Go as much as your recovery/schedule allows you to. I realize everyone has a life outside of the dojo but BJJ has a huge learning curve (imo because it includes so much from other grappling systems too)

Watch out for spazzy people. You'll know exactly what I mean, people that crank submissions, go apeshit for positions, and treat every rolling session as though it were Mundials. If you're nursing an injury don't be afraid to take time off, or let your training partners know.

Relax! Have fun. If it's not fun you're not doing it right.

Also wash your gi often!

couple awesome ones already.

I will add-

Train smart dont just rush into 6x weekly especially if you're sedentary. Basically every fitness thing everywhere says to gradually increase new activities- I was good 2-3x a week for a while and just iced stuff(knees, back, etc) as they come up. Eventually I toughened up.

Do supplemental prehab work outside of the club. Lifting weights will reduce your chance of injury.

Spend some time in BJJ you'll notice how everyone is in various stages of injury :)
